Trump and Six Co-Conspirators Indicted for Attempting to Overturn 2020 Election

08:13 02.08.2023

In a significant development, the indictment of former President Donald J. Trump has shed light on the existence of six co-conspirators who allegedly worked alongside him in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election. While the indictment does not explicitly name these individuals, it provides descriptions that align with key figures involved in the investigation into election tampering conducted by special counsel Jack Smith.

Among the individuals believed to be central to the conspiracy are Rudolph W. Giuliani, the lawyer who spearheaded Trump's efforts to challenge the election results by alleging widespread fraud. Additionally, John Eastman, a law professor who provided legal justification for overturning the election by manipulating the count of electors, is implicated. Sidney Powell, another lawyer who urged Trump to deploy the military to seize voting machines and hold a rerun of the election, is also mentioned as a potential co-conspirator.

Jeffrey Clark, who held a position in the Justice Department at the time, is included as one of the alleged co-conspirators. Furthermore, Kenneth Chesebro and James Troupis, lawyers who played a role in formulating the plan to utilize fake electors pledged to Trump in states won by President Biden, are also mentioned in connection with the conspiracy.

While the identities of the co-conspirators have not been officially confirmed, Giuliani's lawyer, Robert J. Costello, acknowledged that his client appears to be referenced as "co-conspirator No. 1" in the indictment. Costello vehemently criticized the indictment, labeling it as "election interference" and an infringement on the First Amendment.

The final report from the House select committee investigating the events of January 6th shed light on a power struggle between Giuliani, who urged Trump to promote allegations of fraud, and other campaign lawyers who distanced themselves from such claims.

The indictment characterizes co-conspirator 2 as a lawyer who devised and sought to execute a plan to exploit Vice President Mike Pence's role in overseeing the certification proceeding that took place inside the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. This aligns closely with Eastman's advice to Trump, suggesting that he could pressure Pence to disrupt or delay the certification process. However, a lawyer representing Eastman did not respond to requests for comment on the matter.

Co-conspirator 3 is described as another lawyer whose baseless claims of election fraud were deemed crazy even by Trump himself. This description aligns with Powell, who gained notoriety during the post-election chaos by filing four lawsuits in crucial swing states, alleging a conspiracy involving Chinese software companies, Venezuelan officials, and other actors.

While it remains unclear why the special counsel's office decided to pursue only Trump's indictment at this stage, it is speculated that some of the co-conspirators could face charges in the coming weeks. As the investigation unfolds, the nation eagerly awaits further details on the alleged roles played by these individuals in the attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.
