False alarm: No injuries or shooter reported at US Capitol

18:04 02.08.2023

In a tense and chaotic afternoon on Capitol Hill, reports of a possible active shooter led to a lockdown and evacuation of Senate office buildings. The scare began when a call came in to the Washington Metropolitan Police Department reporting an active shooter in the U.S. Capitol complex. However, after an extensive search of the area, police found no evidence of a shooter or any injuries.

The U.S. Capitol Police urged people inside Senate office buildings to shelter in place as a precautionary measure. While most lawmakers were away on summer recess, there were still staff members and tourists present in the Capitol. Police advised everyone to remain in their offices and take emergency precautions, such as silencing electronic devices.

The situation caused panic and confusion, with police officers instructing people to run and ordering staff members to find a safe place to hide. Capitol Police officers armed with long guns evacuated one Senate office building, while others remained sheltering in place on higher floors. The House sergeant-at-arms also advised staff members on the House side of the building to avoid the Senate office buildings.

A heavy police presence, including the District of Columbia's Metropolitan Police Department, was visible at the Capitol. The search for a potential shooter continued, with officers combing through three buildings. However, no evidence of a shooter, victims, or gunshots was found.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger later revealed that the 911 call that prompted the security scare may have been "bogus." He stated that there was no confirmation of an active shooter and that the call may have been a false alarm. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the call within seconds, but no credible threat was found.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Washington, D.C., as former President Donald Trump is set to face arraignment on Thursday on four felony charges related to his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. Law enforcement agencies have been preparing for potential unrest surrounding the arraignment.

While the situation on Capitol Hill turned out to be a false alarm, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by the U.S. Capitol complex. Authorities remain vigilant and prepared for any potential threats as they continue to ensure the safety of lawmakers, staff, and visitors.
