However, their seemingly perfect life came to an abrupt end when Robert filed for divorce on April 5, accusing Lindsay of infidelity. In response, Lindsay claimed in court documents that Robert had a history of violence towards her and was attempting to cut her off from his finances.

Despite the allegations made in the divorce proceedings, Shirely, who was close to the family, stated that he never witnessed any signs of domestic abuse and described Robert as a "good fellow." He expressed his disappointment and disbelief at the situation, wondering what could have led Lindsay to allegedly plot her husband's murder.
