Scottish Court Approves Extradition of U.S. Rape Suspect Who Faked Death

06:04 03.08.2023

In a shocking turn of events, a Scottish court has made a ruling stating that Nicholas Rossi, also known as Nicholas Alahverdian, can be extradited back to the United States. The man, who vehemently denies being Alahverdian, was apprehended in December 2021 at a hospital in Glasgow, where he was receiving treatment for COVID-19. Despite his persistent denial, the court has reached a decision in favor of his extradition. Judge Norman McFadyen, presiding over the case at the Edinburgh Sheriff Court, had previously ruled in November 2022 that the man claiming to be Arthur Knight was indeed Alahverdian. The judge stated that he was "ultimately satisfied on the balance of probabilities... that Mr. Knight is indeed Nicholas Rossi, the person sought for extradition by the United States." This ruling now places the case in the hands of Scottish government ministers, who will make the final decision regarding the extradition.

Throughout the course of this highly unusual saga, the suspect, alongside his wife, has given several bizarre television interviews. In these interviews, he has accused authorities of tattooing him while he was in a coma in order to resemble the wanted man, and has pleaded for privacy while expressing his strong desire to return to a normal life. He has continuously stated, "I am not Nicholas Alahverdian! I do not know how to make this clearer!" However, Judge McFadyen has dismissed his claims as fanciful and "implausible."

For a significant period of time, US authorities have maintained that Nicholas Rossi and Arthur Knight are one and the same person, Nicholas Alahverdian. Alahverdian is facing charges related to a rape that allegedly took place in Utah in 2008. He is also wanted for failing to register as a sex offender in Rhode Island, as well as facing fraud charges in Ohio. Prior to his departure from the United States, Alahverdian had become an outspoken critic of Rhode Island's Department of Children, Youth and Families. He publicly shared his personal experiences of enduring sexual abuse and torture while under their care.

Questions surrounding Alahverdian's alleged death in 2020 had been raised by Rhode Island State Police, his former lawyer, and his former foster family. An online obituary had claimed that he had passed away on February 29, 2020, but doubts had arisen regarding the authenticity of this claim. The arrest of the suspect in Scotland finally put an end to the alleged deception.

Since his apprehension, the individual in question, who has been identified as Nicholas Rossi by the Scottish court, has made numerous court appearances. Throughout these proceedings, he has dismissed multiple lawyers while maintaining his denial of being Alahverdian or Rossi. The ruling for his extradition may bring an end to the protracted legal proceedings surrounding his case.

In a bizarre twist to the story, it was revealed that the suspect had initially claimed to be an innocent Irishman named Arthur Knight. However, the court dismissed his claims after finding that his tattoos and fingerprints matched records held by the UK's National Crime Agency. Despite the suspect's efforts to evade justice and his ongoing denial of his true identity, the court's ruling now paves the way for his extradition to the United States. Once there, he will face charges related to the alleged rape in Utah and other offenses. The final decision on the fate of the man believed to be Nicholas Alahverdian, also known as Nicholas Rossi, now lies with the Scottish government ministers.
