Zach Wilson's Stellar Performance in Jets' Hall of Fame Game

02:54 04.08.2023

In a highly anticipated matchup on Sunday, the New York Jets faced off against the Cleveland Browns in the annual Hall of Fame Game held in Canton, Ohio. This game marked the return of the Jets' promising young quarterback, Zach Wilson, who played the first quarter before being replaced by Tim Boyle. Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, is adjusting to his new role as the backup to Green Bay Packers' superstar Aaron Rodgers.

Despite the preseason nature of the game, Wilson managed to provide a highlight reel moment with a 57-yard pass to wide receiver Malik Taylor on the Jets' second series. This impressive throw set up a 54-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein, showcasing Wilson's potential. However, apart from this big play, Wilson's night was relatively quiet. He completed 3-of-5 passes for a total of 65 yards, with his other two completions totaling just eight yards. This outing highlighted both his potential and his need for further improvement.

On the other side of the field, the Browns' fifth-round pick, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, stole the show in the third quarter. However, before his stellar performance, the game experienced a brief delay when the lights at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium went out. Once play resumed, Thompson-Robinson confidently led a 10-play, 78-yard touchdown drive, culminating in a 22-yard pass to Austin Watkins. Thompson-Robinson also displayed his speed by rushing for 37 yards on five carries. The game showcased the Browns' quarterback competition between Thompson-Robinson and Kellen Mond, the Minnesota Vikings' third-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft. Mond started for the Browns and finished the night 13-of-19 with one touchdown and one interception.

Although the Browns showed a strong performance, it was the Jets who scored first in the game. Rookie running back Israel Abanikanda showcased his burst of speed as he found the end zone, giving the Jets a 13-0 lead. However, the Browns quickly responded with a touchdown of their own before halftime. Mond connected with John Kelly on a three-yard pass, narrowing the Jets' lead to 13-7.

Several players stood out in the game, including the Browns' Demetric Felton, who rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown, and the Jets' first-round pick, Will McDonald IV, who made key tackles on defense. The game had its fair share of missed field goals and punts early on, indicating some rust from both teams. However, Zuerlein's strong leg helped the Jets secure points with two field goals in the first quarter.

In the end, the Browns emerged victorious with a final score of 21-16, thanks in part to Thompson-Robinson's impressive performance and Bubba Bolden's late interception. Despite the outcome, the Hall of Fame Game provided valuable insights into the progress and potential of both teams as they continue their preseason preparations. As the preseason continues, all eyes will be on Zach Wilson as he aims to prove himself as Rodgers' capable backup and lead the New York Jets to success in the upcoming season. Head coach Robert Saleh expressed confidence in Wilson's growth and development, noting his decisiveness and comfort on the field. Wilson's tenure with the Jets has had its fair share of ups and downs, but he appears determined to learn from his past mistakes and embrace the opportunity to learn from Rodgers.
