Twitch Gamer Kai Cenat Charged for Inciting Riot After PS5 Giveaway Chaos

06:28 05.08.2023

In a shocking turn of events, popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat's planned giveaway at Union Square Park in Manhattan quickly spiraled into chaos on Friday. Cenat, who boasts an impressive following of over 20 million subscribers on Twitch, had promised to give away PlayStation 5s and other gaming electronics to his fans. However, what transpired next was described as a "full-on riot" as an estimated 2,000 teenagers and young adults descended upon the park, wreaking havoc and prompting a massive police mobilization.

Videos captured the scene as Cenat arrived at the park, immediately being mobbed by thousands of cheering fans. Within half an hour, the crowd turned violent, with rioters tossing cones, bottles, and rocks, and engaging in brawls. The NYPD's riot squad was called to the scene as the chaos spread to surrounding streets. Police sources described the situation as a "full-on riot," and a total of 65 people, including Cenat and 30 minors, were arrested.

Cenat was taken into custody at a Midtown precinct and is facing charges of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly. The mayhem resulted in injuries to three police officers and four civilians. Aerial footage showed the mob flooding the streets, with some individuals using barricades to confront the police. They also threw bottles, eggs, and construction equipment, while shouting derogatory statements towards law enforcement.

The Union Square giveaway was meant to be one of Cenat's generous acts of charity, as he has previously donated $10,000 to a 13-year-old fan with a rare heart condition. Despite his philanthropic efforts, Cenat has faced several controversies throughout his career. He has been banned from Twitch five times, including for explicit simulated activity during a Grand Theft Auto 5 stream and for using hateful language. He has also faced allegations of a rape cover-up after a TikTok star claimed she was assaulted at one of Cenat's parties.

Cenat, a 21-year-old Twitch streamer and YouTube rapper from the Bronx, achieved fame on Twitch after breaking the record for the most subscriptions, topping 300,000. He was honored as "Streamer of the Year" at the 12th Streamy Awards in December 2022.

Friday's events serve as a stark reminder of the power and potential dangers of social media. The incident highlights the need for accountability and consequences for those who incite violence or engage in destructive actions. The NYPD is urging for those responsible for the chaos to be identified and held accountable. As investigations continue, the aftermath of this riot will undoubtedly have lasting repercussions for both Cenat and his young followers.
