A tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening in Riverside County, California, as two firefighting helicopters collided in mid-air while battling a blaze. According to reports, the helicopters were contracted by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and were working to extinguish a brush fire on 20 acres of Native American land in Cabazon.

The crash took place just south of Morongo Casino, causing a fiery collision that resulted in the deaths of three individuals. CalFire Southern Region Chief David Fulcher revealed that those killed were a CalFire division chief, a CalFire captain, and a contract pilot. The other helicopter managed to land safely, and fortunately, no injuries were reported among its occupants.

The collision also sparked an additional four-acre fire, which firefighters were able to promptly extinguish. Speaking about the incident, Chief Fulcher expressed his gratitude that the situation was not more severe, emphasizing the dangers faced by both ground and aerial firefighters.

The cause of the mid-air collision is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, with further updates expected from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's deputies responded to the air emergency at 7:20 p.m., while crews were actively engaged in battling the Broadway Fire near Cabazon.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks faced by firefighters as they work tirelessly to protect lives and property. Their dedication and bravery are commendable, and officials and first responders will remain on the ground until the fire is fully extinguished. This developing story highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance safety protocols and ensure the well-being of all those involved in firefighting operations.
