Tragic Mid-Air Crash Claims 3 Lives as Firefighting Helicopters Collide

05:18 07.08.2023

In a tragic incident on Sunday evening, two firefighting helicopters collided in mid-air while battling a blaze in Riverside County, California. The helicopters, contracted by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, were working to extinguish a brush fire on 20 acres of Native American land in Cabazon when the collision occurred. The crash took place just south of Morongo Casino, causing a fiery collision that claimed the lives of three individuals.

According to CalFire Southern Region Chief David Fulcher, those killed in the collision were identified as a CalFire division chief, a CalFire captain, and a contract pilot. The other helicopter managed to land safely, and fortunately, no injuries were reported among its occupants. However, the collision sparked an additional four-acre fire, which firefighters were able to promptly extinguish.

Speaking about the incident, Chief Fulcher expressed gratitude that the situation was not more severe and emphasized the dangers faced by both ground and aerial firefighters. He acknowledged the dedication and bravery of these firefighters, highlighting the risks they undertake to protect lives and property. Officials and first responders will continue to remain on the ground until the fire is fully extinguished.

The cause of the mid-air collision is currently under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, with further updates expected from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's deputies responded to the air emergency at 7:20 p.m. while crews were actively engaged in battling the Broadway Fire near Cabazon. This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by firefighters in their tireless efforts to protect communities.

This developing story underscores the importance of ongoing efforts to enhance safety protocols and ensure the well-being of all those involved in firefighting operations. As authorities continue their investigations, the incident will hopefully provide valuable insights that can lead to improved safety measures in future firefighting operations.
