Miami top cop's wife saves his life during attempted suicide: lawyer

02:32 08.08.2023

Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo Freddy Ramirez's wife, Jody Ramirez, is being credited with saving his life after a suicide attempt last month. According to their lawyer, the couple had a heated argument on July 23 while staying at the JW Marriott in Tampa for a sheriff's conference. Police briefly placed Ramirez in handcuffs during the incident. Hours later, while driving home on Interstate 75, Ramirez allegedly shot himself in the head in front of his wife. Jody Ramirez was able to grab her husband's arm, preventing the injury from being fatal, their lawyer stated. In a chilling 911 call, Jody can be heard desperately pleading for help. Ramirez, who remains the director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, is currently on medical leave and is recovering in a Tampa area hospital. Last week, authorities released body camera footage and a police report that shed light on the initial dispute. A witness reported seeing the couple arguing, with Ramirez allegedly threatening to "end it now" and placing a gun in his mouth. However, the lawyer maintains that Ramirez never took out his gun and there was no physical aggression between him and his wife. When police arrived at the hotel, the witness had left and the couple had returned to their room. Tampa police then confronted Ramirez, who did not comply with instructions to raise his hands and was subsequently handcuffed. The couple's lawyer expressed shock at the police response, stating that both Jody and Freddy were bewildered by the sudden arrival of numerous officers. Freddy Ramirez assured responding officers that he posed no threat to himself or others. During questioning, Jody admitted to a heated argument and blamed Freddy for pushing her buttons by buying her an alcoholic drink. However, she claimed she was not concerned about her safety or his, though she acknowledged that he had "plenty of demons from the job." Ramirez, a 27-year police veteran, was appointed as the head of the Miami-Dade Police Department by the county mayor. He had also announced his intention to run as a Democrat in the primary for the newly created role of Miami-Dade sheriff. It remains unclear if he will continue his candidacy. The incident is currently under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Highway Patrol.
