Woman in Texas Attacked by Snake and Hawk While Mowing Lawn

03:47 09.08.2023

Jones, who was riding a tractor at the time, couldn't believe what was happening. She immediately tried to shake off the snake, but it quickly wrapped itself around her right arm, constricting tightly. As she struggled to free herself, a brown and white hawk swooped down, clawing at her arm in an attempt to snatch the snake away.

The horrifying attack lasted only a few seconds, but to Jones, it felt like an eternity. She described the fear and pain she experienced as the hawk repeatedly struck her face, hitting her glasses multiple times. "He's not coming off. It's like he's glued onto my arm," she recalled.

Eventually, the hawk managed to rip the snake off Jones' arm and flew away with its prey. Left behind were punctures, lacerations, and bloody wounds on her arm. Jones suspected that the snake had spat venom at her during the attack, as she felt a burning sensation and noticed the liquid hitting her skin.

In shock and pain, Jones immediately sought help from her husband, Wendell, who was mowing the front of the property. Together, they rushed to the emergency room, where their daughter met them. On the way to the hospital, Jones struggled to see out of her right eye, adding to her distress.

At the hospital, doctors examined Jones' arm and determined that the injuries were likely caused by the hawk's talons rather than a snake bite. She was given antibiotics and prescribed additional medication. Worried about the possibility of swelling or discoloration, Jones spent her first night at home closely monitoring her arm.

This terrifying incident was not Jones' first encounter with wildlife. Two years ago, she was bitten by a venomous snake, an experience that took time to recover from. However, the pain she felt from the snake attack and the pain she felt from the hawk's talons were distinctly different. Jones knew what to look for, and the wounds she sustained this time did not match those of a snake bite.

Since the attack, Jones has been unable to bring herself to mow the lawn again. The traumatic experience has left her psychologically scarred, plagued by nightmares and sleepless nights. "It's just been like a rollercoaster. I'm just thankful that I'm alive, and I'm here to tell my story," she said.

Living in rural Texas, Jones was familiar with hawks and snakes, but she never anticipated such a violent and simultaneous attack. She now understands the predatory nature of hawks, as they often hunt small mammals, birds, and reptiles like snakes. The incident has served as a stark reminder of the dangers that can be present even in one's own backyard.

As Jones continues to recover from her physical and emotional wounds, she hopes that her story will serve as a cautionary tale to others. "I never thought this would happen to me," she said. "But it's important to be aware of the wildlife around you and always stay vigilant."
