Tragic heat stroke claims Texas man spreading father's ashes at Arches National Park

03:48 09.08.2023

A tragic incident occurred in Arches National Park, Utah, as the body of James Bernard Hendricks, a 66-year-old man from Austin, Texas, was found. It is believed that Hendricks died of heat stroke while on a trip to spread his father's ashes, according to his sisters, Ila Hendricks and Ruth Hendricks Brough. Hendricks had been hiking in the park when he likely became disoriented due to a combination of heat, dehydration, and high altitude.

Hendricks, who was fondly known as "Jimmy," had made a stop in Utah during his journey across the West to the Sierra Nevada mountains. He intended to spread his father's ashes on a peak located outside Reno, Nevada. However, his plans were tragically cut short. Park officials reported that Hendricks was reported overdue on the morning of August 1, and rangers discovered his vehicle at a trailhead parking lot. Later that day, during a search off the trail, Hendricks' body was found about 2 1/2 miles from the trailhead.

Despite being an experienced hiker, Hendricks had an empty water bottle, indicating that he had run out of water. His sisters believe that he embarked on a long hike on the morning of July 29, which was the last day he was seen alive. It is believed that he perished during a second, shorter hike on the same day. The temperature in the area reached over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, making conditions extremely challenging.

Adding to the tragedy, Brough later discovered that her brother had been taking medication that can lead to dehydration. She described the news of his death as a "horrible crushing blow to everybody," emphasizing that Hendricks was an adventurous person who loved nature and was physically strong.

This heartbreaking incident is not the first tragedy to befall the Hendricks family. Brough revealed that another sibling, Ron Hendricks, had disappeared over two decades ago in the Lake Tahoe area. The family recently received the news that Ron's remains had been found and identified through DNA testing. James Hendricks had been organizing a memorial service for his brother before his own untimely death.

The National Park Service and Grand County Sheriff's Office are currently investigating James Bernard Hendricks' death. While an official cause of death has not yet been determined, heat and altitude are considered relevant factors, according to Lt. Al Cymbaluk of the sheriff's department.

Arches National Park, situated in a high-elevation desert north of Moab, Utah, is renowned for its natural sandstone arches. The area had experienced scorching temperatures throughout the summer, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Sadly, this tragedy is not an isolated incident, as an Oregon woman also died recently in northern Phoenix during a hike, with authorities suspecting heat as the cause of death.

The news of James Bernard Hendricks' death has left his loved ones and friends devastated. His kind and amiable nature had endeared him to countless people, making the loss even more profound. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a man who embraced adventure and the beauty of nature.
