Unseen memo reveals Trump's plot to subvert election; Pence's potential testimony

12:33 09.08.2023

A previously unseen internal memo from the 2020 Trump campaign has been obtained by The New York Times, revealing a detailed plot by former President Donald Trump and his lawyers to subvert election results in six states. The memo, obtained by The New York Times, describes a three-pronged plan to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory on 6 January 2020, which involved coordinating with Republican electors and campaign attorneys in six states, as well as former Vice President Mike Pence.

The rift between Trump and Pence has widened, as the former vice-president stated that he would answer "the call of law" and give evidence against Trump if required. Pence could be a key witness in the latest case brought against the former president, who has pleaded not guilty to four counts relating to his attempt to overturn the result of the 2020 election. During an interview on CBS' Face the Nation, Pence stated, "I have no plans to testify, but people can be confident we'll obey the law. We'll respond to the call of the law, if it comes, and we'll just tell the truth."

Interestingly, when asked whether he would vote for Trump if he were the Republican presidential nominee next year, Pence refused to give a direct answer. This comes after last week's indictment, which detailed how Trump and his co-conspirators repeatedly lied about the results of the 2020 vote and pressured Pence and state election officials to take action to help overturn the election. These efforts culminated in the violent storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by Trump supporters in an attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden's victory.

Although Pence stated that he has "no plans to testify" against Trump, he vowed to "obey the law" during his interview with CBS. The former vice-president, who is also a 2024 Republican presidential candidate, was asked by CBS correspondent Major Garrett whether he would be a witness against Trump if the case went to trial. Pence's response indicated that he would respond to the call of the law and tell the truth, but he did not explicitly confirm whether he would testify against Trump.

This latest development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing legal battle surrounding Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. As the case progresses, the role of key figures like Pence will undoubtedly come under scrutiny, potentially revealing further details about the plot described in the internal memo obtained by The New York Times.
