07:58 10.08.2023

American singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, known for his immense popularity in South Africa during the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 81. Rodriguez, based in Detroit, was oblivious to his significant fan base in South Africa, where his songs became anthems for the anti-apartheid movement. His story was immortalized in the Oscar-winning documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," released in 2012, which followed two South African music fans on their journey to discover Rodriguez's fate.

Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul, who directed the documentary, described the narrative as a real-life fairy tale. The film shed light on Rodriguez's life as a struggling artist in Detroit, where his albums Cold Facts and "Coming from Reality" failed to achieve commercial success. Despite being hailed as a talent on par with Bob Dylan, Rodriguez remained relatively unknown in his home country.

However, across the Atlantic, his music resonated deeply with South African audiences who were captivated by his lyrics depicting the struggles of the working class and the decline of society. Rodriguez's songs became a source of inspiration and hope for those fighting against apartheid. Unbeknownst to him, his records were selling in the thousands, and his music symbolized a voice of resistance.

The documentary propelled Rodriguez to international fame, and he began performing at prestigious music festivals such as Glastonbury and Montreux Jazz Festival. His live performances captivated audiences worldwide, and his songs took on new meaning in the context of his remarkable story.

Rodriguez's legacy will continue to live on through his music, which touched the hearts of many listeners. Despite his late recognition, he remained humble and grateful for the love and support he received. Earlier this year, Rodriguez underwent an operation to repair damage from a stroke, but the cause of his recent death has not been disclosed.

He is survived by his three daughters, who have been witnesses to their father's extraordinary journey from obscurity to becoming an icon of the anti-apartheid movement. Rodriguez's passing marks the end of an era, but his music will forever remain a testament to the power of art to inspire change and transcend borders.
