Rory McIlroy Calls Out Phil Mickelson Over Betting Allegation

02:37 11.08.2023

In a bombshell revelation, an excerpt from Billy Walters' book, "Gambler: Secrets from a Life at Risk," was published on the Firepit Collective website, alleging that golf superstar Phil Mickelson, known for his love of gambling, wagered over $1 billion on sports over the last 30 years. The book also claims that Mickelson asked his associate to place a $400,000 bet on the U.S. team to win the Ryder Cup in 2012. Rory McIlroy, one of golf's biggest stars, couldn't resist commenting on the situation. Despite shooting a 3-under 67 in the first round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, McIlroy took a dig at Mickelson, stating, "At least he can bet on the Ryder Cup this year because he won't be a part of it." Mickelson, playing in a LIV event in Bedminster, N.J., released a statement denying the allegations and affirming that he never bet on the Ryder Cup. He also mentioned his gambling addiction and his commitment to therapy. This controversy is not the first time McIlroy has taken a swipe at Mickelson, as he previously made a remark about Mickelson losing credibility during an episode of the Netflix series "Full Swing." The book further reveals Mickelson's extensive gambling losses, estimated to be around $100 million. Walters stated that Mickelson would bet large sums on various sports, such as NBA parlays and football, basketball, and baseball games. Walters, a convicted felon, claims that Mickelson's testimony could have helped him avoid jail time. However, Mickelson chose not to testify, leading Walters to blame him for his daughter's suicide while he was in jail. While Walters' motivations may be questionable, Mickelson's propensity for recklessness cannot be ignored. Mickelson's association with Walters mirrors his risky decision-making on the golf course, such as his ill-fated attempt at the 2006 U.S. Open. Mickelson now finds himself in a difficult situation, trying to clear his name from the accusations while dealing with the consequences of his actions.
