Conservatives Slam DOJ's Special Counsel Appointment in Hunter Biden Probe

14:17 12.08.2023

In a heated exchange on their respective shows, Fox News host Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters expressed their outrage over the appointment of David Weiss as special counsel in the ongoing Hunter Biden investigation. Both Hannity and Watters did not hold back in their scathing criticism of the Department of Justice (DOJ), accusing them of using Weiss' appointment as a strategy to protect President Joe Biden.

Hannity, known for his outspoken commentary, labeled the appointment a "sham from the get-go," arguing that the DOJ had been slow-walking the criminal probe into Hunter Biden for several years. He specifically pointed out Weiss' role in the rejected plea deal negotiation, describing it as a "sweetheart deal" that no ordinary person would receive. Hannity emphasized that Weiss was not the right person for the job, given his previous inaction and apparent leniency towards Hunter Biden.

Watters, on his show "Jesse Watters Primetime," echoed Hannity's sentiments, calling the appointment of Weiss a mistake. He criticized Weiss for never having opened Hunter Biden's laptop, failing to follow up on allegations of a $5 million bribe involving Joe Biden, and not being proactive in pursuing search warrants. Watters argued that the appointment of Weiss raised doubts about the ability to fairly investigate the Bidens, especially considering his previous involvement in the plea agreement. He suggested that Republicans demand access to the scope memo of the investigation to ensure that Weiss can pursue leads that could potentially implicate Joe Biden.

The appointment of Weiss as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland has raised eyebrows among GOP lawmakers, including Senator Lindsey Graham, who labeled it a "political decision." Graham accused the DOJ of trying to solve a legal problem they created for themselves and questioned Weiss' impartiality. He expressed doubt that Weiss could conduct a fair investigation into the Bidens, given his past involvement in the plea agreement. Graham viewed the decision to appoint Weiss as a misguided attempt to clean up the mess surrounding the investigation.

In response to the criticism, Attorney General Garland defended his appointment of Weiss during a press conference. He stated that the decision was in accordance with DOJ regulations and emphasized that it underscored the ongoing nature of the investigation into Hunter Biden and any related matters. Garland made it clear that the White House was not informed of his decision before the announcement, dispelling concerns of political influence.

The controversy surrounding Weiss' appointment as special counsel has ignited further debates about the fairness and integrity of the investigation into Hunter Biden. Republican lawmakers are now calling for transparency and demanding answers regarding the scope and direction of the probe. The appointment of Weiss has only intensified the already deep political divide surrounding the Biden family's business dealings, casting doubt on whether the investigation can truly remain impartial.
