North Korea condemns US soldier's escape, citing Army racism

03:36 16.08.2023

In a surprising turn of events, North Korea has publicly acknowledged the case of American soldier Private 2nd Class Travis King, who crossed into its territory last month. The North Korean state media, Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), reported that King intentionally entered North Korea due to what he described as "inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. Army." This is the first time North Korea has commented on King's case, shedding some light on his motivations.

According to the KCNA report, during the investigation conducted by North Korean officials, King confessed to illegally intruding into North Korean territory. The report stated that King expressed his disillusionment with the unequal American society, which ultimately led him to seek refuge either in North Korea or a third country. However, the report did not provide any further details about King's current situation or whether North Korea plans to accept him as a refugee or send him to another country. The investigation into King's case is ongoing, and North Korea has yet to decide on his fate.

The Pentagon, on the other hand, has expressed doubts about the validity of the reported comments made by King. A spokesperson for the Defense Department stated that they could not verify the comments and reaffirmed their focus on ensuring King's safe return. The priority for the United States is to bring King home, and they are utilizing all available channels to achieve this outcome.

The classification of King's status has become a subject of debate within the U.S. military. As an active-duty soldier, he may initially appear to qualify as a prisoner of war (POW), considering that the United States and North Korea technically remain at war, with the Korean Peninsula still in a state of war due to the absence of a peace treaty. However, factors such as King's decision to cross into North Korea willingly and in civilian attire have seemingly disqualified him from obtaining POW status.

Private 2nd Class Travis King's troubled history within the U.S. Army may have contributed to his decision to cross into North Korea. He had faced multiple allegations of assault in South Korea and had recently pleaded guilty to one instance of assault and destroying public property. King had finished serving military detention and was being transported by the U.S. military to the airport for his return to his home unit in the United States. However, instead of boarding the plane, King left the airport and joined a tour of the border area, where he ultimately ran across the border despite attempts by South Korean and U.S. guards to stop him.

North Korea's response to King's case has been inconsistent in the past. While the country has accepted American soldiers who have deserted and arrived in the country as political defectors, it has detained civilian Americans accused of illegal entry and used them as propaganda tools against the United States. Given this history, the fate of Private 2nd Class Travis King remains uncertain as the investigation continues, leaving many questions unanswered regarding how North Korea will handle his case.
