Authorities have revealed that the home at the center of the devastating explosion in Plum, Pennsylvania, had been experiencing issues with its hot water tank. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal's Office issued a statement on Monday night, urging the public to avoid the area as investigations into the cause of the explosion are still ongoing. The fire marshal's office confirmed that the homeowners at 141 Rustic Ridge Drive had been dealing with hot water tank issues and that the tank was located in the basement of the home. They will now be exploring this information, along with other possibilities, to determine what occurred. The explosion, which occurred on Saturday morning, claimed the lives of five individuals, including Heather Oravitz, the town's community development director, and Plum Borough Manager Michael Thomas. Also among the victims were Kevin Sebunia, Casey Clontz, and Clontz's 12-year-old son, Keegan. Oravitz's husband, Paul, sustained severe burns and remains in critical condition. Two others were treated and released from the hospital. The blast resulted in the destruction of three structures and damage to at least a dozen more. First responders who arrived at the scene reported that people were trapped under debris, with one house completely leveled and two others engulfed in flames. Fire departments from both Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, along with 18 other departments, responded to the incident. Residents in the area described the aftermath of the explosion as resembling a war zone or a bombed neighborhood. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with authorities cautioning that the process will be thorough and time-consuming. Video footage captured by a Ring security camera showed the peaceful suburban neighborhood moments before the blast, followed by chaos and debris flying in all directions. The development where the explosion occurred is situated on abandoned mine land and is surrounded by shallow, still-producing, or abandoned oil and gas wells. However, none of these structures have been implicated in the blast. The community of Plum is located approximately 20 miles east of Pittsburgh.
