Zuckerberg dismisses Musk's cage match proposal

11:54 17.08.2023

The highly anticipated cage match between tech moguls Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk seems to be falling apart. In a recent statement, Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, expressed his belief that Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), is not serious about facing him in a mixed martial arts fight. Zuckerberg urged Musk to let go of the idea, stating, "I think we can all agree Elon isn't serious and it's time to move on." The Facebook founder had previously suggested a date for the fight and even secured UFC president Dana White's support in making it a legitimate competition with proceeds going to charity.

Musk, however, responded on X, referring to Zuckerberg as a chicken in reply to a tweet about the ongoing feud. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO also shared a supposed text exchange between him and Zuckerberg, in which the latter suggests that Musk train on his own and inform him when he's ready to fight. Zuckerberg, who is known to train in jujitsu, expressed his frustration at the lack of commitment from Musk and advised him to either fully commit to the cage match or drop the idea altogether. Musk admitted that he hasn't been practicing much but proposed a practice fight in Zuckerberg's own backyard octagon.

The back-and-forth between the two tech giants began in June when Musk initially challenged Zuckerberg to a "cage match." Zuckerberg enthusiastically accepted the challenge, and Musk went on to announce that the fight would be live-streamed on X and Meta, with the funds raised going to charity. He also teased that the fight would take place in a grand location in Italy. However, Musk recently revealed that he has a shoulder problem that may require surgery, potentially putting the fight on hold for a few months.

Meanwhile, experts have been closely watching the competition between Zuckerberg's newly launched social media platform Threads and Musk's X. Threads had a remarkable start, reaching 100 million users faster than any other app. However, user engagement has significantly declined since then, with only 8 million daily active users remaining by the end of July. In contrast, X boasted 238 million users before Musk took the company private. Despite the challenges faced by Threads, analysts believe its affiliation with Meta, which owns popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, gives it a strong advantage in the race against X.

As the possibility of the cage match continues to wane, Zuckerberg has been providing frequent updates on Threads regarding the potential fight. Musk, on the other hand, expressed his lack of enthusiasm, stating, "I'm going to focus on competing with people who take the sport seriously." The future of this rivalry remains uncertain, but for now, it seems that the much-anticipated showdown between Zuckerberg and Musk may never come to fruition.
