Southern Plains shaken by 5.1 magnitude earthquake

10:22 03.02.2024

Late Friday night, an initial earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude struck an area near Oklahoma's capital, followed by a series of smaller quakes, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake, which occurred at 11:24 pm, was centered 8 kilometers (5 miles) northwest of Prague, Oklahoma, approximately 57 miles (92 kilometers) east of Oklahoma City.

Following the initial quake, at least two smaller temblors were recorded in the same area. The USGS reported magnitudes of 2.6 and 3.5 for these subsequent quakes. The shaking from the initial earthquake was felt across a large area, including Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and even as far as Wichita, Kansas.

The town of Prague, with a population of around 2,000 people, was near the epicenter of the earthquake. Despite reports of cracking walls and a loud boom, there were no immediate reports of damage in the first hours after the quake. However, the USGS cautioned that the threat of aftershocks would continue for some time.

This recent earthquake is part of a series of seismic events that have been occurring in Oklahoma. Just a month ago, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake rattled the Oklahoma City metro area. Friday's quake is estimated to be among the top four most significant events in the state since 1900.

In 2016, Oklahoma experienced a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that caused moderate damage in north-central parts of the state. Studies linked this event to wastewater injection from oil and gas production. The USGS has previously highlighted the connection between human activities, such as fracking, and the increase in earthquakes in the southern Plains. Fracking involves injecting water, sand, and chemicals into the ground to extract oil and gas reserves, but it can also trigger quakes and impact groundwater.

While it is too early to determine whether human activities played a role in the most recent quake, the USGS continues to investigate. As this is a developing story, further updates will be provided.
