Biden campaign strategically uses GOP debate in massive messaging operation

15:10 17.08.2023

U.S. President Joe Biden's re-election campaign is gearing up for the upcoming Republican debate in Wisconsin, using the event as an opportunity to engage thousands of social media volunteers and launch their first advertising campaign aimed at Black and Latino voters, according to a Democratic official. Although former President Donald Trump has announced that he will skip the Fox News broadcast, Democrats are still planning to closely watch the debate, using it as a "high-impact press and organizing opportunity," as stated by the campaign official.

The Biden campaign will kick off its third major paid ad campaign of the election cycle, with a focus on targeting Latino and Black media. While the exact dollar figure has not been disclosed, the campaign plans to saturate Milwaukee with advertisements showcasing Biden's "record of accomplishments." In addition, a billboard truck will circle the debate venue. Prior to the debate, Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond and Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Jaime Harrison will hold a press conference.

To further capitalize on the debate, the Biden campaign will ask hundreds of thousands of volunteers, particularly in swing states, to post online during the event. These volunteers will contrast Republican statements with Biden's record, with the goal of expanding support for the Biden-Harris ticket and their agenda for the middle class. Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez emphasized that the debate presents an opportunity to activate and energize supporters.

It is worth noting that Biden's re-election campaign has taken a low-key approach thus far, with the president focusing primarily on fundraising and his presidential duties. However, political strategists argue that Biden needs to win over unimpressed Black and Latino voters, energize Democrats who may be unenthusiastic about a second term, and boost his approval ratings, which currently hover around 40%. Wisconsin, a closely divided swing state, is one of the key battlegrounds where both parties are directing their resources in 2024. In 2020, Biden won the state by a slim margin, while Trump had a similar victory in 2016.

In anticipation of the Republican debate, the Biden campaign and the DNC are preparing to contrast their message with what they call "extreme MAGA views" expressed on stage. The goal is to highlight the differences between President Biden's policies and the Republicans' "out of touch views," with a warning that electing a Republican in 2024 would reverse the progress made by the Biden administration. The campaign plans to mobilize and energize the Biden-Harris coalition ahead of the general election by showcasing the contrast.

Biden campaign officials will be present in Milwaukee during the debate to meet with local leaders and key constituencies. DNC Chairman Jamie Harrison will also host Black engagement events in Milwaukee and attend an event with women voters in suburban areas. In Washington, D.C., the Biden campaign and the DNC will jointly run an "aggressive war room" to hold Republican candidates accountable for their alleged extreme MAGA views.

The DNC is expected to launch a billboard campaign across Milwaukee, featuring three standing billboards and a billboard truck that will circle the debate venue. Additionally, the campaign will send emails, texts, and launch Facebook ads to supporters, leveraging the event for grassroots fundraising. The aim is to make it clear to voters that the 2024 Republican primary is a race for the MAGA base, rather than an effort to earn the support needed to win the general election.

As the first presidential debate of the 2024 election cycle approaches, the Biden campaign is determined to spotlight what they consider to be the extreme positions of the Republican candidates. They believe that the candidates will try to out-MAGA each other on stage, and the campaign intends to ensure that every American is aware of their perceived extremism. The debate will be aired on Fox News, with Rumble serving as the online live-streaming partner, and Young America's Foundation partnering in the event.
