Horrifically graphic video shows 5 students brutally murdered by Mexican cartel

08:41 19.08.2023

The disappearance and brutal murder of five young men in Mexico has shocked and angered the nation. The victims, all students and friends aged between 19 and 22, were lured by a fake job offer and deceived into meeting with the Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG) drug cartel, according to a report by El Universal. The men had sought employment as private security and met a contact in town before vanishing. Their horrific deaths were captured in a graphic video that circulated online, showing them being duct-taped, beaten, stabbed, and beheaded.

The victims were later identified as Roberto Olmeda, Diego Lara, Uriel Galvan, Jaime Martinez, and Dante Cedillo, as reported by El Pais. It is believed that the young men had contacted a call center, hoping to secure high-paying jobs with attractive benefits. However, unbeknownst to them, these call centers are often managed by drug cartels for the forced recruitment of individuals. The CJNG, in this case, sought to recruit the victims but killed them when they refused.

The exact identity of the cartel responsible for the video and deaths is yet to be confirmed by the Attorney General's Office in the Mexican state of Jalisco. The CJNG and the Sinaloa cartel are the two major drug cartels vying for control over the La Orilla del Agua neighborhood in Lagos de Moreno, where the young men were kidnapped.

On Wednesday, Mexican authorities located the property where the photo and video were allegedly filmed, discovering four burned and decapitated bodies inside a building. The bodies, badly burned and yet to be identified, were found near the place where the victims were kidnapped and held captive. Additionally, another body was found in a burned-out car nearby.

Photos shared by Jalisco prosecutors depict brick and concrete buildings on a ranch, surrounded by an open field. Bloodstains on the floor and scattered shoes were visible, with investigators examining the area. The state prosecutor's office stated that it strongly suggests the five youths were present at this ranch.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador expressed his regret over the killings during a news briefing but did not provide further details. Federal prosecutors have taken over the case due to the involvement of drug cartels. The young men had gone missing while attending a festival in Lagos de Moreno, an area known for cartel violence. They were later seen in a video, bound by tape and surrounded by gang members, with one of them bludgeoning and decapitating his friend.

This gruesome incident brings back memories of other horrifying instances of drug cartel brutality, such as the forced fights and killings among kidnapped victims. In 2010, the Zetas cartel abducted men and forced those who refused to join them to beat each other to death with sledgehammers. The following year, authorities discovered 48 clandestine graves with the bodies of 193 people, most of whom had their skulls crushed with sledgehammers, in the state of Tamaulipas.

The discovery of human remains during the search for the missing young men has further intensified the outrage and sorrow surrounding this case. The families of the victims recognized the clothing worn by the victims in the video. The disappearance and brutal murder of these five young men serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing violence and insecurity plaguing Mexico.
