Quarterback Movement in the NFL: What Fantasy Managers Need to Know

In recent years, quarterback movement in the NFL has become more robust than ever, with star players like LeBron James, Brett Favre, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady making significant changes to their teams. This season, fantasy managers will have to consider several categories of new quarterbacks, including those who have relocated and those who are familiar but wearing unfamiliar uniforms.

One of the biggest headlines in quarterback movement is Aaron Rodgers' move from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets. This move mirrors Favre's similar journey in 2008, as both quarterbacks were in the twilight of their careers and were ushered out to make room for a new QB. While Rodgers may still have some good years left, the Jets have better offensive weapons than the 2008 squad, including running backs Dalvin Cook and Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson. The team is also making efforts to make Rodgers happy, with him appearing to be the puppeteer directing the coaching staff.

Another familiar face in an unfamiliar uniform is Derek Carr, who is moving from the Las Vegas Raiders to the New Orleans Saints. While Carr may have been considered mediocre in Las Vegas, his connection with wide receiver Davante Adams resulted in increased fantasy production for Adams. This suggests that Carr can deliver for fantasy managers, making him a viable option as a QB. Additionally, Adams' new QB in Green Bay is Jimmy Garoppolo, who helped Deebo Samuel become the No. 2 fantasy receiver in 2021. Adams should still receive plenty of targets, particularly in the red zone.

There are also new starters who have been promoted from bench roles, although they may not inspire much fantasy optimism. One potential surprise is Jordan Love, who has been elevated to the starting position for the Green Bay Packers following Rodgers' departure. Love has a decent supporting cast and showed enough potential for the team to let go of a future Hall of Famer like Rodgers. While drafting him as a fantasy QB may be a stretch, he could still impact the draft strategy for players targeting wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts.

On the other hand, some new starters, like the Atlanta Falcons' Desmond Ridder and the Washington Commanders' Sam Howell, have limited fantasy data to assess their potential. Ridder's connection with London resulted in improved numbers, including more receptions and yards per game. Although his touchdown production with Ridder declined, it's worth noting that touchdowns can be somewhat random. Therefore, fantasy managers can expect better results from London, while still considering Pitts and leaving Ridder off their radar.

As for Howell, who is practically a rookie in terms of fantasy data, not much is known about his potential. The Washington Commanders' roster doesn't offer many other significant fantasy options, aside from running backs Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson Jr., and wide receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin, in particular, could be a valuable pick in the fifth round, as he has consistently performed well despite the team's overall lack of talent.

In conclusion, the quarterback movement in the NFL this season presents both challenges and opportunities for fantasy managers. While some familiar faces in new uniforms offer promise for fantasy production, others may need more time to prove their worth. Ultimately, careful consideration of each quarterback's situation and supporting cast will be crucial in making informed fantasy decisions.
