Alonso's costly mistake: First-career hit thrown away in stands

10:50 19.08.2023

In a moment that will surely be etched in his memory forever, St. Louis Cardinals' shortstop Masyn Winn made his highly anticipated major league debut on Friday night. As the Cardinals took on the New York Mets, Winn managed to secure his first big league hit in the fifth inning, an impressive infield single that showcased his speed and agility on the field.

However, the significance of this milestone was overshadowed by the actions of Mets' first baseman Pete Alonso. Unaware that it was Winn's first-career hit, Alonso made a critical error by throwing the baseball into the stands. The Cardinals' dugout erupted in disapproval, expressing their disappointment at Alonso's thoughtless act. Even pitcher Miles Mikolas had to be cautioned by first-base umpire John Tumpane to control his emotions in response to the incident.

Alonso, clearly remorseful for his actions, expressed his deep regret to reporters after the Mets' 7-1 victory. "I feel horrible. I feel awful. I know it sounds stupid, but it's just a bad brain fart," Alonso admitted. "I know throwing the ball in the stands, that robs him of a really special moment. I feel really bad, thinking back on my first hit, and just getting the ball thrown back. I feel like a piece of crap."

Fortunately, the Cardinals' director of security confirmed that the team had managed to retrieve the baseball from a fan. Through negotiations, the Cardinals were able to barter for the ball, offering the fan an autographed ball, jersey, and hat in exchange. This ensured that Winn would have the precious keepsake that marked his memorable debut.

Reflecting on his mistake, Alonso vowed never to repeat such an error again. "I'll never throw the ball into the stands again," he stated. "I'm just going to roll every ball to the dugout when they switch it out. That's a really bad mistake, and it's completely unintentional. I feel horrible about it." Alonso even took the initiative to apologize to Winn directly during the game, promising to make amends for his unintentional blunder.

Winn, on the other hand, was blissfully unaware of the ball's trajectory after reaching first base. He was fully immersed in the joy of his first hit, with thoughts of anything else far from his mind. His first base coach, Stubby Clapp, was the one to inform him about Alonso's throw into the stands. "He apologized on first. Then when he got to second later, he apologized as well. Complete accident," said Winn. "I thought it was quite funny. Especially after we got the ball back, I thought it was a little bit more funny."

As the Mets and Cardinals gear up for the third game of their four-game series, the incident involving Alonso's errant throw remains a talking point. The Cardinals' ire towards Alonso lingers, but the return of the baseball to Winn has somewhat alleviated the tension. The spotlight now shifts back to the game itself, with both teams eager to secure a victory in this highly contested series.
