Dwayne Haskins' estate settles lawsuit with driver, owners of dump truck that killed him

The estate of late NFL quarterback Dwayne Haskins has reached a "partial settlement" in its lawsuit against the driver, owner, and broker of the dump truck that struck and killed Haskins, according to the family's lawyer. Rick Ellsley, the lawyer for Haskins' family, stated that previous settlements had been secured with other parties involved in the case, but there are still 10 other defendants remaining. A court date has yet to be determined.

The family's lawsuit alleges that Haskins was drugged, robbed, and extorted before being fatally struck while standing drunk on a highway after running out of gas. Toxicology reports revealed that Haskins was legally drunk when he was hit by the truck on I-595. Separate samples taken from his body indicated blood alcohol levels of .20 and .24, both exceeding the legal limit of .08 in Florida.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Fort Lauderdale, claims that the former Ohio State star was drugged and robbed by a man and three women in the hours leading up to the accident. The alleged incidents occurred at a Boca Raton hotel, an upscale golf driving range, a bar, and a nightclub, although the lawsuit does not provide specific details. Additionally, the suit states that the pickup truck Haskins had rented had a mechanical defect that caused it to run out of gas.

Furthermore, the family asserts that the state highway department failed to properly maintain and illuminate the road, or post a lower speed limit during construction work. They argue that a temporary sign obstructed visibility on the highway. A death report issued by the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office in May 2022 stated that a woman who was with Haskins informed investigators that they had run out of gas near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport before dawn. Witnesses told the Florida Highway Patrol that Haskins was attempting to wave down cars and was standing in the center lane when he was struck by the dump truck and subsequently an SUV. The report concluded that Haskins died from blunt force trauma.

It is worth noting that the individuals and businesses being sued by Haskins' family have not had criminal charges filed against them, and there is currently no evidence submitted in court to support the claims made by the family.
