Tommy Pham gets into nasty altercation with fan: 'Called me a piece of s-t'

11:43 20.08.2023

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Tommy Pham found himself in a heated altercation with a fan during a game against the San Diego Padres on Saturday. Pham claimed that the fan called him a "piece of s-" while he was in the on-deck circle. The incident was captured on video by a fan named Patrick Dailey's wife.

In the video, Pham can be heard saying, "Don't disrespect me like that," as he engaged in a back-and-forth with the fans. However, things escalated when another fan told Pham to "go strike out," which he took offense to. Pham pointed out that he was being disrespected by a White man as a Black man himself.

Dailey, who had been arguing with Pham, took to social media to express his disappointment in Pham's reaction. He claimed that Pham had severe anger management issues and accused him of playing the race card. Dailey also mentioned that Pham had never been disrespectful to players before.

After the game, Pham spoke to reporters about the incident, stating that he is all for good banter but felt that the fan had crossed a line. He criticized Padres fans in general, saying that he found their behavior disrespectful both at and away from the field. Pham also mentioned an incident outside the team's hotel where a drunk woman, who seemed uneducated about baseball, insulted him by saying, "That's why we got rid of you."

It should be noted that Pham has had a history of controversial incidents. Last year, he was involved in a physical altercation with Joc Pederson over a high-stakes fantasy football issue, resulting in a suspension and fine. Additionally, Pham was stabbed in 2020 while playing for the Padres.

Despite the controversy, Pham had a successful game at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored in the Diamondbacks' 6-4 victory. He currently holds a batting average of .267 and an OPS of .822 for the season.
