Trump's Georgia booking leads to millions in campaign fundraising

15:24 27.08.2023

Former President Donald Trump's campaign has seen a surge in fundraising since his booking at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, where he faces charges related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. According to campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, the campaign has raised over $7 million since Trump's mugshot was taken, marking the first time in US history that a former president has had their mugshot taken. The fundraising momentum continued on Friday, with Trump bringing in a staggering $4.18 million, making it the highest-grossing day of his campaign thus far.

Despite the mounting legal charges, Trump's political standing within the Republican presidential primary remains strong. Recent polls show him consistently leading his rivals by a significant margin of 30 to 50 points. This resilience in the face of legal woes has evidently translated into a significant boost in fundraising for the former president's campaign.

Trump himself described the experience of having his mugshot taken as terrible and admitted that it was an uncomfortable feeling. However, his campaign wasted no time capitalizing on the situation, using the mugshot in fundraising pitches to supporters before Trump had even returned home to New Jersey.

Notably, the campaign's fundraising success has come alongside significant expenditures on Trump's legal defense. His political operation has reportedly spent tens of millions of dollars on lawyers as he faces charges in four separate jurisdictions. Recent campaign finance filings reveal that while Trump raised over $53 million during the first half of 2023, his political committees have paid out at least $59.2 million to more than 100 lawyers and law firms since January 2021.

Despite the hefty legal expenses, the campaign's fundraising efforts have not been deterred. In fact, the mugshot has become a lucrative merchandising opportunity for the campaign. Shortly after Trump shared the image on social media platforms such as Truth Social and X (formerly known as Twitter), his campaign released a new line of merchandise featuring the mugshot. The initial offering included t-shirts, but it quickly expanded to include beer Koozies, bumper stickers, a signed poster, and even mug shot mugs.

The merchandising strategy proved to be a success, as contributions from supporters who purchased the merchandise or donated without prompting skyrocketed. Trump's tweet, in particular, amplified the fundraising message and drove further donations. As a result, the campaign's fundraising haul over the last three weeks has reached nearly $20 million.

The juxtaposition of substantial fundraising success and substantial legal expenses highlights the paradoxical nature of Trump's current situation. While he faces mounting charges and legal battles, his campaign continues to enjoy strong financial support from his loyal base. This dynamic showcases the enduring loyalty and dedication of Trump's supporters, as well as the significant financial resources at his disposal.
