Serial 'black widower' convicted of killing 6th wife and hitman

After 15 years, a long and convoluted legal process has finally come to an end for Thomas Randolph as a Nevada jury found him guilty of orchestrating the murder of his sixth wife, Sharon Causse, and shooting dead the hit man he hired to carry out the crime. The jury convicted Randolph, 68, of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of murder with the use of a deadly weapon after five hours of deliberation.

The courtroom was tense as the verdict was read. Randolph, who uses a wheelchair and wore headphones for the hard-of-hearing, remained emotionless and stared straight ahead. However, the daughter of his sixth wife, Colleen Beyer, gasped and clasped her hands to her mouth upon hearing the guilty verdict. After 15 years of waiting, she expressed her relief and described the ordeal as a "twisted nightmare."

Outside the courtroom, Beyer tearfully expressed her satisfaction with the verdict, stating that she was "absolutely ecstatic and thrilled" that Randolph would no longer be able to harm another woman. She labeled him a "serious predator" and expressed her gratitude that he would be off the streets.

The case dates back to May 8, 2008, when Randolph dialed 911 and claimed that a masked intruder had shot his wife. He then revealed that he recognized the intruder as his friend and handyman, Michael Miller, whom he had hired to kill his wife. Prosecutors presented phone records as evidence of Randolph's extensive relationship with Miller, including numerous calls between the two. They argued that Randolph had arranged for Miller to carry out the murder to collect more than $300,000 in insurance money. The insurance policies Randolph had taken out on his wife's life in the years leading up to her death further supported this claim. The case gained significant media attention and was the subject of Dateline's 2021 miniseries, "The Widower."

However, the Nevada Supreme Court overturned Randolph's previous conviction and death sentence in 2020, citing the inclusion of "prior bad-act evidence" involving his previous arrest for the death of his second wife, for which he was acquitted. Four of Randolph's six wives have died, with the fifth wife succumbing to cancer and the fourth wife dying during heart surgery in 2004. Additional testimonies from a man who claimed Randolph had offered to pay him to kill his fourth wife, as well as accounts from Randolph's living ex-wife and his first wife detailing his abusive behavior, were also presented during the trial.

Prosecutors were limited to presenting evidence strictly related to the 2008 murders of Causse and Miller. They highlighted inconsistencies in Randolph's accounts to the police, including a video walkthrough of the crime scene. The prosecution argued that the amount of evidence found in the hallway where the shooting allegedly occurred was insufficient, and the trajectory of the bullets that killed Miller did not align with Randolph's retelling. They also pointed out that Randolph failed to provide proper aid to his wife, as urged by the 911 dispatcher.

Randolph's defense attorney, Josh Tomsheck, argued that his client had tried to provide medical aid and criticized the response time of law enforcement. The defense contended that the police unfairly focused on Randolph due to his previous arrest in Utah and that the crime scene was mishandled. Nevertheless, Chief Deputy District Attorney Christopher Hamner portrayed Randolph as a villain rather than a victim, emphasizing that his story did not align with the evidence presented.

Following the verdict, Tomsheck expressed his disappointment and stated that both the defense and Randolph had hoped for a different outcome. Randolph's sentencing is scheduled for October 12, and it remains to be seen what punishment he will face for the crimes he committed over a decade ago.
