07:36 30.08.2023

A beloved store clerk in San Francisco has tragically passed away after being brutally beaten with a baseball bat while attempting to prevent a thief from stealing just two bottles of beer. Yowhannes John Tewelde, 60, sustained a major brain injury during the late Thursday attack at Richmond Market and never regained consciousness, ultimately succumbing to his injuries at a local hospital on Tuesday.

Tewelde, described as a loyal and trustworthy person, was highly regarded within the community and cherished by his family and friends. In response to the devastating incident, a neighbor initiated a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his medical expenses, expressing the sentiment shared by many that Tewelde was a cherished member of the community. The outpouring of support and condolences from the community further emphasized the impact Tewelde had on those around him.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Thursday while Tewelde was working at the Balboa Street store. The thief had already managed to steal some water earlier and returned to the store to take two bottles of beer. Determined to protect the store, Tewelde confronted the thief with a baseball bat. However, surveillance footage showed the thief violently knocking Tewelde to the ground, causing him to strike his head. The assailant then seized the bat from Tewelde and repeatedly struck him before fleeing the scene. As of now, the suspect remains unidentified and at large.

Meron Tewelde, the victim's daughter, expressed her disbelief at the tragic turn of events. She mentioned that her father, who had recently become a United States citizen and had undergone heart surgery just months before, had an unwavering dedication to his work at the store. Meron expressed her sorrow and emphasized her father's deep love for the community that he served.

Friends and family members remembered Tewelde as a positive and friendly presence in the neighborhood. Many recalled his warm smile that greeted customers as they entered the store, remarking on how his kindness and dedication brightened their day. The sudden loss of such a beloved community figure has left many in shock and mourning.

In response to the tragic incident, a vigil is planned for Thursday night outside of the market, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and honor Tewelde's memory. The event aims to provide solace and support to Tewelde's grieving family and loved ones during this difficult time.

The death of Yowhannes Tewelde highlights the devastating consequences that can arise from acts of violence within communities. Tewelde's unwavering dedication to his work and his community serves as a reminder of the importance of valuing and protecting those who contribute so much to the places we call home. The search for justice for Yowhannes Tewelde continues as authorities work diligently to identify and apprehend the suspect responsible for this senseless act of violence.
