Alex Murdaugh Stripped of Prison Phone Privileges for Recording Fox Nation Documentary

01:29 31.08.2023

Former attorney Alex Murdaugh, who is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife and son, has had his privileges revoked in prison after violating rules regarding phone calls and media interviews, according to the South Carolina Department of Corrections. Records show that Murdaugh broke the rules by reading his journal entries to his lawyer, Jim Griffin, during a phone call, which Griffin recorded and provided to the media. The Corrections Department stated that this violated the rights of the victims and their families, who should not have to see or hear the person who victimized them in the news. Inmates in the South Carolina Department of Corrections lose the privilege of speaking to the media upon entering the prison system.

The department also revealed that Murdaugh used another inmate's PIN for a phone call, which further violated prison rules. Murdaugh claimed that he used someone else's PIN because his own was not working, as stated in the Corrections Department incident report. As a result of these violations, Murdaugh lost his prison phone and canteen privileges, and his access to a personal tablet was also revoked.

The violations committed by Murdaugh are considered administrative and do not constitute crimes, according to the department. However, the prison warden received a report from the Office of the Inspector General on August 15, stating that Murdaugh had participated in an interview with Fox Nation. The incident report mentioned that the recording was intended for a forthcoming documentary titled "The Fall of the House of Murdaugh."

Jim Griffin, Murdaugh's lawyer, has not yet responded to requests for comment. Similarly, Fox News Media has not provided a comment regarding the situation.

Prosecutors previously stated that Murdaugh killed his wife and son in June 2021 to divert attention from financial crimes and gain pity. The case and subsequent trial received significant media attention. Murdaugh comes from a well-connected legal family in South Carolina's Lowcountry.

In addition to his life sentence for the murders, Murdaugh is expected to plead guilty to federal charges related to financial crimes. He is also awaiting trial on over 100 other charges in state court, including those related to a staged suicide attempt.
