BU Staffers and Professor Accuse Kendi's Center of Exploitation and Employment Violence

09:00 20.09.2023

Boston University has faced backlash after confirming that at least 15 staff members were laid off from the Center for Antiracist Research, spearheaded by critical race theory defender Ibram X. Kendi. Professor Phillipe Copeland accused the university of "employment violence and trauma" for allowing these layoffs, stating that it undermines the principles of antiracism. Copeland called for an explanation from Boston University on how its premier center ended up in this situation and criticized the prevalence of performative antiracism in higher education.

Boston University's PR Associate Vice President Rachel Lapal Cavallario stated that the Center is transitioning to a fellowship model, with Dr. Kendi remaining as the director. She confirmed the layoffs and assured that the university is committed to supporting the affected employees in finding their next opportunities. However, Copeland argued that this decision contradicts the principles of antiracism and called for institutions preaching antiracism to practice it genuinely.

In his criticism, Copeland shared his own experience of mismanagement at the Center, stating that he had to leave because of what he witnessed. He claimed that he was subsequently removed from the leadership of the Fellowship Program he created, despite offering to continue serving without compensation. According to Copeland, this action by Boston University contradicts their claims of promoting diversity, inclusion, and antiracism.

Other staff members also criticized the structure of the Center for Antiracist Research, describing it as exploitative. Spencer Piston, faculty lead of the center's policy office, expressed concerns about the concentration of power in one individual's hands and the lack of proper structure. Saida Grundy, former assistant director of narrative at the center, echoed these sentiments, stating that faculty members experienced exploitation and excessive work hours.

The announcement of the Center for Antiracist Research came in 2020 after the George Floyd riots, during a time when racial tensions were high. However, the recent layoffs have raised questions and sparked discontent among staff members. Some argue that there may be deeper issues at play beyond the transition to a fellowship model.

Kendi, who gained prominence for his defense of critical race theory, was hired by Boston University as a history professor in June 2020. He subsequently moved his antiracist research center from American University to Boston University. Kendi has authored books on racism, including "How to Be an Anti-Racist" and "Antiracist Baby," which aim to address racial concepts and educate people, including children.

As the controversy continues, Boston University has not responded to requests for comment. The future of the Center for Antiracist Research and the concerns raised by staff members remain unresolved.
