Arrest made in ambush slaying as suspect claims insanity defense

19:12 20.09.2023

In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 29-year-old man from suburban Los Angeles pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the murder of a sheriff's deputy. The suspect, identified as Kevin Eduardo Cataneo Salazar, was arrested on Monday after an intense manhunt and a four-hour standoff at a home in the high desert suburb of Palmdale.

The murder took place on September 16 when Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, was ambushed and shot while waiting at a red traffic light. Clinkunbroomer, a third-generation law enforcement officer who had recently become engaged, was found wounded in his patrol vehicle by a passerby who rushed to the nearby sheriff's station to seek help. Tragically, despite efforts to save him, Deputy Clinkunbroomer succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney, George Gascon, expressed his outrage at the ambush attack, calling it "absolutely unacceptable" and an attack on law enforcement as a whole. Gascon highlighted the fact that Deputy Clinkunbroomer was in uniform and stopped at a red light in his patrol vehicle, just like thousands of other law enforcement officers and deputies who serve their community every day.

Authorities revealed that Salazar had followed Deputy Clinkunbroomer from the nearby Palmdale Sheriff's station before shooting him with a 22 caliber revolver from the front seat of his own vehicle. After the shooting, Salazar fled the scene, leaving law enforcement officials scrambling to apprehend him.

The arrest came after a reward of $250,000 was offered for information leading to the capture of the suspect. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced the arrest during a news conference, stating that Salazar had barricaded himself inside a home in Palmdale before surrendering to authorities. Luna expressed confidence that they have the right person in custody but emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and there may be more arrests.

As of now, authorities have not determined a motive for the shooting, describing the situation as "fluid." Luna acknowledged the unanswered questions surrounding the case, wondering why Deputy Clinkunbroomer was targeted and expressing the intent to uncover the truth.

Salazar has been charged with one count of murder and could face life in prison if convicted. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for November 7 at the Antelope Valley Courthouse as the community mourns the loss of Deputy Ryan Clinkunbroomer and seeks justice for his senseless killing.
