Cavs President Altman's Alleged OVI Incident Captured on Body Cam

20:05 20.09.2023

Cleveland Cavaliers president of basketball operations, Koby Altman, pleaded not guilty in court through his attorney after being arrested for operating a vehicle while impaired. Newly released body camera footage from the arrest showed Altman struggling through a series of field sobriety tests before eventually being taken into custody. The incident occurred on Friday around 9 p.m. ET when Altman was stopped by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

During the traffic stop, an officer noted that Altman had nearly caused an accident while speeding on state Route 2 near East 55th Street in Cleveland. The officer proceeded to ask Altman how many drinks he had consumed, to which the Cavs executive claimed he had only one or two. Altman, attempting to explain his behavior, mentioned that he was exhausted from traveling overseas and having dinner. In the body camera footage, Altman can be heard saying, "I'm also exhausted, too. I just got back from an overseas trip. I promise you I'm the president of the Cavaliers. I just had a long dinner. I mean, I'm trying to - I understand the tests, I'm just trying to work with you on - I was trying to get home."

The officer acknowledged Altman's statement but emphasized that the reason for the stop was Altman's near-accident. Altman insisted that he believed he was driving under the speed limit. However, he later declined a breathalyzer test and was subsequently taken into custody. He now faces charges of committing a marked lanes violation and operating a vehicle while impaired.

The Cleveland Cavaliers released a statement expressing their expectations for high standards of conduct and accountability from their team members. They stated that they would closely monitor the facts and circumstances of the matter while awaiting the legal process for resolution. It remains unclear if Altman will face any discipline from the team.

Koby Altman, who finished second in NBA Executive of the Year voting last season, was promoted to general manager of the Cavs in 2017. Under his leadership, the team won 51 games last season and made their return to the NBA playoffs after a four-year absence. The arrest raises questions about Altman's future with the club and the potential impact it may have on his position as president of basketball operations.

Altman's attorney entered a not guilty plea on his behalf in Cleveland Municipal Court. Altman, who had previously worked as an assistant coach before joining the Cavaliers in 2012, has been a significant figure within the organization and played a role in their 2016 NBA championship victory. As the legal process unfolds, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact Altman's career and the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
