Powerball jackpot skyrockets to $725M after record-breaking drawing drought

09:11 21.09.2023

The Powerball jackpot has reached a staggering $725 million after Wednesday night's drawing failed to produce a winner. This makes it the eighth-largest jackpot in the history of the Powerball game. The winning numbers for the Wednesday, September 20th drawing were 16, 27, 59, 62, 63, with a Powerball number of 23. The Power Play multiplier for that drawing was 3X. The next drawing will take place on Saturday, September 23rd.

Although no one claimed the jackpot, there were still over a million winning tickets from Wednesday's drawing. Among these winners, two lucky players from Georgia and Texas each won $2 million, and another player from Georgia won $1 million. Additionally, twenty-five tickets won $50,000, and eleven tickets won $150,000.

The Powerball drawings are broadcast live and livestreamed from Tallahassee, Florida every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EST.

The current estimated value of the Powerball jackpot is $725 million, with a cash value of $345.7 million. This makes it the third-largest prize offered this year. Winners of the jackpot have the choice between a lump sum payment of $345.7 million or receiving 30 incremental payments that will total an estimated $725 million. The odds of winning any prize in Powerball are one in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot are one in 292.2 million.

The largest Powerball jackpot ever won was a staggering $2.04 billion, sold in California in November 2022. In February 2023, a $754.6 million Powerball jackpot was won in Washington, followed by a $1.98 billion jackpot won in California in July. This July win was the third time the Powerball surpassed $1 billion and was also the most recent winning ticket sold.

Here is a list of the top 10 Powerball jackpots:

1. $2.04 Billion - November

2. $1.586 Billion - January 13, 2016 - California, Florida, Tennessee

3. $1.08 Billion - July 19, 2023 - California

4. $768.4 Million - March 27, 2019 - Wisconsin

5. $758.7 Million - August 23, 2017 - Massachusetts

9. $699.8 Million - October 4, 2021 - California

10. $687.8 Million - October 27, 2018 - Iowa, New York

The Powerball jackpot continues to climb as no tickets matched all six numbers in Wednesday's drawing, resulting in a $672 million grand prize remaining unclaimed. With an estimated value of $725 million, the current jackpot offers a one-time cash payout option of $345.7 million. This makes it the eighth-largest prize in Powerball history.

The winning combination for Wednesday's drawing consisted of the numbers 16, 27, 59, 62, and 63, with a Powerball number of 23. The Power Play option for that drawing was 3X. According to the game, there is a 1 in 292.2 million chance of winning the grand prize.

Despite the absence of a jackpot winner, a few fortunate individuals did manage to match all five white numbers drawn on Wednesday. One player from Georgia walked away with a $1 million prize, while two others, one from Georgia and another from Texas, opted for the Power Play option, doubling their winnings to $2 million each.

The largest Powerball jackpot of the year, and the third-largest in the game's history, was won by a California player in July, who claimed the $1.08 billion prize. Since then, the jackpot has been up for grabs in 27 consecutive drawings. The game's sixth-largest prize ever, amounting to $754.6 million, was awarded to a Washington player in February.

Powerball tickets are sold for $2 each and can be purchased in 45 states, as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. More than half of the proceeds from ticket sales remain in the jurisdiction where the ticket was bought.
