Terrifying Encounter: Colorado Moose Attacks Woman Walking Dog

10:03 21.09.2023

In a series of alarming incidents, wildlife officials in Colorado are investigating multiple moose attacks on hikers and their dogs. The most recent attack occurred on Wednesday along the South Saint Vrain Trail near Ward, outside of Boulder. A woman and her dog were walking when they surprised a moose on the trail, resulting in the cow moose charging at the woman and repeatedly headbutting and stomping on her. Fortunately, she was able to make her way to a nearby neighbor's house, who then contacted Boulder County deputies. The woman was subsequently taken to a local hospital for treatment, while her dog suffered minor injuries.

Despite wildlife officers responding to the area, the moose was not found. As a precautionary measure, Colorado Parks and Wildlife have erected signs in the vicinity, warning hikers not to approach wildlife and to leash their pets. Additionally, one sign specifically alerts visitors to the presence of a cow moose with calves in the area. It is emphasized that cow moose can become particularly aggressive when their calves are nearby, and hikers should exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings.

This is not an isolated incident, as Colorado has experienced several moose attacks this year alone. Just last Tuesday, a hiker in Teller County, near Colorado Springs, was trampled by a moose. The hikers, accompanied by three dogs, encountered a cow moose and its calf while on the Crags Trail. Attempting to keep their distance, the hikers proceeded cautiously, but the moose continued to approach them, prompting one of the dogs to bark. Subsequently, the moose charged at the group, trampling one of the hikers. Even after the hikers managed to fend off the moose, it continued to pursue them.

Fortunately, the injured hiker was able to walk away from the encounter and sought evaluation at a nearby hospital, sustaining only minor injuries. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife department stresses the importance of keeping dogs on leashes while hiking, as moose may perceive them as threats. They also highlight that cow moose can exhibit aggressive behavior when their calves are present.

These recent incidents serve as a reminder of the potential dangers hikers may encounter while exploring Colorado's beautiful trails. It is crucial for outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution, maintain a safe distance from wildlife, and adhere to guidelines provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife to ensure their safety and the preservation of the state's diverse wildlife.
