Mayor of Utah attacked after criticizing reporter's coverage

15:15 21.09.2023

In a shocking turn of events, the mayor of Orem, Utah, Mayor David Young, was allegedly spit on and punched by Linnea Pugmire, the adult daughter of a reporter during a heated confrontation outside City Hall. The incident was captured on video by a witness and shared with NBC affiliate KSL of Salt Lake City.

The altercation came after Mayor Young spent around 20 minutes during a City Council meeting discussing articles written about him and the council by reporter Genelle Pugmire, dismissing them as "off the rails" and "overly ridiculous." The mayor read out headlines from several articles, criticizing their content and painting the council in a negative light.

In the video, Linnea Pugmire can be seen approaching Mayor Young, saying, "How dare you?" to which he responds, "How dare you? Get out of my face!" Pugmire then spits at the mayor before charging towards him and throwing a punch. Pugmire also swings towards other people standing nearby, shouting, "Don't talk about my mother."

According to the police booking affidavit obtained by KSL, Pugmire admitted to being upset at the mayor over personal concerns with their family. The report also mentioned a second victim who had been hit and spit on during the incident but did not provide further details.

Pugmire was subsequently arrested and booked into jail on charges of disorderly conduct, assault, propelling a bodily substance, and threatening elected officials. They were released the following day, according to Utah County booking records.

Mayor Young, in a statement following the incident, expressed his hope that it would serve as a wakeup call for more responsible journalism and for greater civility and unity in the community.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of elected officials and the need for civil civic dialogue. The City of Orem issued a statement expressing deep concern over the incident and emphasizing the importance of promoting civility and ensuring the safety of public officials.

The Daily Herald, the local newspaper for which Genelle Pugmire works, has not yet commented on the incident.
