In a surprising turn of events, renowned actor Mel Gibson is set to make his return to the screen in the highly-anticipated John Wick TV series. Titled "The Continental: From the World of John Wick," the prequel series has faced criticism for its casting choice, with fans expressing their concerns over Gibson's controversial past.

Albert Hughes, the director of two of the three upcoming episodes, defended his decision to cast Gibson, stating that he chose him based on his impressive body of work that he himself grew up on. Hughes believes that Gibson fits the role of Cormac, the manager of the New York Continental, perfectly. He reassures fans that they will understand why once they see it, emphasizing that personal matters are not his place to discuss.

However, the backlash on social media has been significant. Some fans argue that John Wick without Keanu Reeves and with Gibson is simply not the same. Others express their disappointment, stating that they cannot support Gibson due to his controversial history. One user confesses to feeling torn, as they love the franchise but despise the actor.

Hughes further explains that the casting process was conducted in the typical manner, considering a pool of five names for one role. Ultimately, Gibson was chosen based on availability and the response from his team. As for Gibson's personal life, Hughes firmly states that it is not his place to delve into such matters.

Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick film franchise, will serve as the executive producer of the TV series. Hughes expresses his admiration for Stahelski and Reeves' work, stating that he wants to have fun with the series while avoiding imitating their style. He describes the show as being in the same world as the films but taking a different path.

Gibson's casting is particularly noteworthy due to his troubled history in Hollywood. Following his 2006 arrest for DUI, during which he made anti-Semitic remarks, Gibson has faced immense backlash and has been largely ostracized from the industry. Tapes of him shouting racial slurs at his former girlfriend in 2010 further damaged his reputation. Despite issuing apologies for his behavior, Gibson's actions have had a lasting impact on his career.

"The Continental: From the World of John Wick" is a three-episode prequel that will premiere on September 22. The show will delve into the backstory of Winston Scott, played by Ian McShane in the films and portrayed by Colin Woodell as a young man. Set in 1970s New York, it follows Scott as he rises to power, featuring characters such as his estranged older brother Frankie, detective KD, and a young Charon. Gibson's character, Cormac, an aging mobster, is also expected to have a significant presence in the series.

Despite the controversy surrounding Gibson's involvement, Hughes stands by his decision, citing the actor's past work and his own admiration for him. He believes that Woodell, who will portray the young Winston Scott, captures the essence of the character and has a captivating on-screen presence. Hughes describes Woodell as a talented actor still exploring his abilities and power, making him a perfect fit for the role.

As the premiere date approaches, fans eagerly await the debut of "The Continental: From the World of John Wick," hoping that the series will live up to the high standards set by its predecessor while offering a fresh take on the beloved franchise.
