New Jersey Republican challenger criticizes 'Gold Bar Bob' Menendez over bribery indictment

19:27 22.09.2023

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey is facing corruption charges for the second time, which has created a significant problem for the Democratic Party, according to FOX News contributor Jonathan Turley. Turley explained that Democrats cannot afford to lose Menendez's vote in the Senate, especially in the midst of an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. The charges against Menendez, which include classic acts of bribery and the denial of honest services as a senator, are said to be colossal. The indictment, set to be unsealed on Friday, alleges that Menendez and his wife engaged in a corrupt relationship with a New Jersey developer and former bank chairman, Fred Daibes, and his associates. The FBI and IRS criminal investigators are currently looking into whether Menendez or his wife accepted up to $400,000 worth of gold bars from Daibes in exchange for Menendez using his position to aid Daibes in a banking crimes case. Menendez has strongly denied these allegations and claims to have been falsely accused in the past. The indictment has drawn criticism from Mendham Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner, a New Jersey Republican who plans to challenge Menendez in the 2024 election. Glassner condemned the alleged culture of corruption surrounding Menendez, accusing him of using his public office to enrich himself while neglecting the needs of his constituents. She claimed that Menendez's policies have contributed to New Jersey having the highest unemployment increase in the country. Glassner expressed her intention to fight against this culture of corruption and bring economic relief to the people of New Jersey if elected to the Senate. The indictment, announced by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams, has shaken up New Jersey's upcoming Senate election. Menendez was previously indicted on federal bribery charges in 2016, but those charges were dropped by the Department of Justice in 2018. The current investigation is unrelated to that case. Glassner, a former businesswoman and the first woman elected mayor of Mendham, officially announced her candidacy for Senate earlier this week.
