Junior at Division III school becomes first woman non-kicker to appear in college football game

00:03 24.09.2023

In a historic moment for NCAA football, Haley Van Voorhis, a safety for Division-III Shenandoah University, became the first woman non-kicker to play in a college football game. Van Voorhis, a 5-foot-6 and 145-pound junior, entered the game against Juniata in the first quarter with Shenandoah leading by 26 points. Making her mark on the field, she registered a quarterback hurry on a crucial third down.

Reflecting on her groundbreaking achievement, Van Voorhis expressed her excitement, stating, "It's an amazing thing. I just wanted to get out and do my thing. I want to show other people this is what women can do, to show what I can do. It's a big moment. I made the impossible possible, and I'm excited about that." The native of Plains, Virginia, previously played on Shenandoah's junior varsity team for two seasons and was recognized as an all-state honorable mention in high school.

Van Voorhis's participation in college football extends beyond her role as a safety. She also competes as a sprinter on Shenandoah's track and field team, showcasing her versatility and athleticism across different sports.

Shenandoah's victory over Juniata with a final score of 48-7 further solidified their successful season, improving their record to 2-1. The team's head coach, Scott Yoder, commended Van Voorhis's dedication and work ethic, emphasizing that she earned the opportunity through her dedication and perseverance. Yoder stated, "What has really helped me has been when you peel everything back, it's about a young person who wants an opportunity, who works for it and has earned an opportunity. For 21 years, I've been fortunate to be on the coaching side of that. And at the core of this, it's no different."

While women have previously made history as kickers in college football, such as Katie Hnida in 2003 and Sarah Fuller in 2020, Van Voorhis's achievement as a non-kicker marks a significant milestone. Fuller, who became the first woman to score in a Power 5 football game as a kicker for Vanderbilt, expressed her admiration for Van Voorhis's accomplishment. Fuller emphasized the importance of perseverance and the ability to overcome challenges, stating, "I just think it's incredible that I am able to do this, and all I want to do is be a good influence to the young girls out there."

Van Voorhis's entry into the game and her impactful play on the field exemplify the growing inclusivity and diversity within college football. Her courage and determination serve as an inspiration to young girls and women who aspire to break barriers and excel in traditionally male-dominated sports. With her historic appearance, Van Voorhis has proven that gender should not limit one's ability to succeed and make an impact on the field.
