Tennessee Mayor Accused of Body Slamming Girlfriend's Son in Yard Work Dispute

05:44 26.09.2023

The mayor of Burns, Tennessee, Landon Shaun Mathis, found himself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend's son over payment for yard work. The incident, which resulted in Mathis being charged with domestic assault, took place on Sunday and was reported to the Dickson County Sheriff's Office.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by WSMV, deputies arrived at a residence on Johnson Street in Burns after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance. They spoke with the victim, identified as KP, who explained that the altercation began over a disagreement about payment for cutting weeds. Mathis had allegedly promised to pay KP $40 for the job but refused to do so once it was completed.

The affidavit detailed KP's account of the incident. He stated that he was in the living room speaking to his mother about the payment when Mathis approached him, grabbing his shirt collar and forcefully pushing him down onto the couch. The physical altercation continued, with Mathis repeatedly pushing KP and leaving visible marks on his neck.

At this point, KP's mother intervened, instructing her son to go to his room. As KP attempted to walk away, Mathis allegedly stepped on his feet, prompting KP to push him away in self-defense. In response, Mathis reportedly grabbed KP and body-slammed him, using some form of neck hold and twisting and pushing on his nose, causing significant pain.

Following the incident, Mathis was taken into custody and booked at the Dickson County Jail. The age of KP, the victim, was not disclosed in the report.

This arrest marks a stark contrast to Mathis's previous reputation as a hero in the community. Over seven years ago, Mathis gained recognition for saving the life of the town's former mayor, Jeff Bishop, who suffered a massive heart attack in 2016. Mathis, who owned a flooring business, administered mouth-to-mouth CPR to Bishop after the two were working together on a job.

Mathis has been serving as the mayor of Burns since 2012. With a population of over 1,500 people, the town is now left to grapple with the shocking allegations surrounding their elected official.
