Deadly Wedding Hall Fire in Iraq Claims Over 100 Lives

20:48 26.09.2023

A tragic incident unfolded in northern Iraq's Nineveh province on Wednesday, as a fire engulfed a wedding hall, claiming the lives of at least 100 people and leaving 150 others injured. The venue, located in the Hamdaniya area, is situated just outside the city of Mosul, approximately 205 miles northwest of the capital city, Baghdad. As authorities scramble to determine the cause of the blaze, initial reports from Kurdish television news channel Rudaw suggest that fireworks used during the celebration may have sparked the fire.

The regional rescue service office revealed that the fireworks caused a fire within the wedding hall, leading to the entrapment of over 700 guests and causing portions of the ceiling to collapse. Heart-wrenching television footage depicted the charred debris strewn across the wedding hall, while a distraught man shouted at the firefighters who valiantly battled the flames. Health Ministry spokesman Saif al-Badr released a casualty figure of 100 fatalities, expressing the government's commitment to providing relief to those affected by this harrowing accident.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has promptly ordered an investigation into the incident, instructing the country's Interior and Health officials to offer assistance to the victims. Najim al-Jubouri, the provincial governor of Nineveh, informed the public that some of the injured had already been transported to regional hospitals. However, with no definitive casualty figures available, fears linger that the death toll may rise.

Civil defense officials cited by the Iraqi News Agency shed light on the potential cause for the excessive destruction. They revealed that the wedding hall's exterior was adorned with highly flammable cladding, which was unlawfully used in the country. These materials were incredibly inexpensive but proved to be highly hazardous as they collapsed within minutes when exposed to fire.

As news of this tragic incident continues to unfold, the international community joins Iraq in mourning the loss of life and extending their heartfelt condolences to the families affected. Ambulances and medical teams from both federal authorities and Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdistan region have been deployed to the site, aiming to provide aid and support during this devastating time. This developing story will be closely monitored and updated as more information becomes available.
