Quick-thinking mom protects son from bear's birthday picnic rampage in Mexico

11:12 27.09.2023

A brave Mexican mother protected her son during a terrifying encounter with a black bear at Chipinque Park in Monterrey, Mexico. Silvia Mac?as and her son, Santiago, had gathered at the park to celebrate Santiago's 15th birthday. Little did they know that their picnic would be interrupted by an unexpected guest.

As the family sat down to enjoy their meal, a black bear appeared out of nowhere and leaped onto their picnic table. The bear wasted no time and began devouring their tacos and enchiladas just inches from their faces. In a video captured by their friend, Angela Chapa, Silvia can be seen holding Santiago close and shielding his eyes from the bear.

Silvia's main concern was Santiago's reaction. She knew that her son is afraid of animals, and she didn't want his fear to provoke the bear into attacking them. "The worst thing was that Santiago might get scared," Silvia explained. "Santiago is very afraid of animals, a cat or a dog, any animal scares him a lot."

To ensure Santiago's safety, Silvia and Angela had planned ahead. They decided to play a game where they would cover Santiago's eyes and remain motionless, acting like statues. Despite the bear being just inches away from them, they held their ground and remained calm. Santiago later admitted that he was very scared during the encounter.

Angela, who was familiar with black bear behavior, came up with a clever idea to distract the bear and allow Silvia and Santiago to retreat safely. She noticed an enchilada that the bear had not eaten and decided to toss it far away from the table. As expected, the bear was drawn to the food and Angela stood in front of Silvia and Santiago, shielding them as they slowly backed away.

Fortunately, the plan worked, and the bear was more interested in the food than the people. Silvia and Santiago were able to leave the area without further incident. And despite the scary encounter, the family didn't let it ruin their celebration. They quickly replaced the devoured tacos and continued to enjoy Santiago's birthday.

Black bear sightings are not uncommon in Chipinque Park, although they are more likely to occur during dawn or dusk. The park is located on the outskirts of Monterrey, a city in northern Mexico. The incident serves as a reminder to visitors to remain cautious and aware of their surroundings, especially when encountering wildlife.

While Silvia's actions were nothing short of heroic, she humbly stated that she was just a mother protecting her cub. The family's quick thinking and the assistance of their friend ensured that this unexpected encounter ended with no harm done.
