Missing Colorado Mom Suzanne Morphew's Remains Discovered After Three Years

16:59 27.09.2023

After more than three years of searching, the remains of missing Colorado mom Suzanne Morphew have been found, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Morphew disappeared on Mother's Day in 2020, and her case gained national attention. The CBI has positively identified the remains as those of Morphew.

The discovery of the remains occurred during an unrelated search in the area of Moffat in Saguache County on September 22. It was only recently confirmed by the El Paso County Coroner that the remains belonged to Morphew of Chaffee County. The news has left the community and the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office deeply affected.

Suzanne Morphew's disappearance had initially implicated her husband, Barry Morphew, who was not only the prime suspect but was also charged with her murder. However, no arrests have been made since the discovery of the remains. Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze stated that while finding Suzanne's remains is an important development, it raises more questions than answers. Therefore, a news conference was not conducted at this time.

The investigation into Suzanne's disappearance revealed a troubled relationship between the couple. Friends of the Morphews reported that they had been arguing about finances and Suzanne may have had a boyfriend. Investigators obtained documents from Suzanne's iCloud account, including a list she made titled "grievances." This list mentioned Barry taking her wedding ring and incidents involving other women on Facebook. It also mentioned an incident in Mexico where Barry tried to take her phone away. On May 6, 2020, Suzanne sent Barry a text indicating her desire to end the relationship.

Barry Morphew's arrest, which occurred on May 5, 2021, included charges of murder after deliberation, tampering with physical evidence, and attempting to influence a public servant. However, the case faced complications, including questions about a conflict of interest involving the judge assigned to preside over the case. The murder trial was eventually moved from Chaffee County to Fremont County due to the small jury pool and high pretrial publicity.

In March 2022, Barry's lawyers requested a dismissal of the case after receiving an internal affairs document related to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's Agent In Charge Joe Cahill. However, the prosecution claimed that the defense was taking statements out of context. Despite the back-and-forth hearings and motions, a judge dismissed the case against Barry Morphew in April 2022. The dismissal was filed without prejudice, leaving the possibility for prosecutors to refile charges in the future.

The discovery of Suzanne Morphew's remains brings a tragic end to the search for the missing mom. With the case still unsolved, the public is urged to continue providing any information related to the investigation. The Morphew family, including Suzanne's two teenage daughters, will now have closure but may still seek justice for their beloved mother. The legal battle continues as Barry Morphew and his lawyers pursue a $15 million federal civil rights lawsuit against prosecutors and local authorities, claiming wrongful arrest. The findings of the investigation and the fate of the lawsuit remain uncertain.
