Arkansas' John Morgan III hospitalized after terrifying on-field collapse

20:20 30.09.2023

In a frightening turn of events during the Arkansas Razorbacks' game against Texas A&M on Saturday, defensive lineman John Morgan III collapsed on the field, leading to a temporary halt in play. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter after a play that seemingly involved minimal contact. According to SEC Network broadcasters, Morgan took just two steps before falling to the ground, prompting immediate concern from both teams and the crowd.

As medics rushed to the field to tend to the senior player, a cart was summoned to transport him to the hospital. Reports from Texas A&M beat writer Travis L. Brown indicated that Morgan was conscious and responsive, with witnesses stating that he was blinking and talking during the ordeal. Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman later revealed that Morgan had experienced some soreness in his neck, leading to the precautionary decision to transfer him to the hospital for further evaluation.

Despite the alarming scene, Pittman reassured the public that Morgan had movement in all parts of his body and had even engaged in a conversation with him, stating, "Coach, I'm fine." The Associated Press quoted Pittman as saying, "But he did have some soreness in his neck. So they took the precaution, which they should. But he had movement everywhere and he's at the doctor."

Alyssa Lang, a sideline reporter for SEC Network, provided additional details during the broadcast. Lang reported that Morgan's neck had snapped backward after the hit, and although he was able to move, there was tenderness and pain in the affected area. Lang shared that Arkansas' athletic director, Hunter Yurachek, had been informed by the trainers of the nature of Morgan's injury and the precautions being taken.

As Morgan was carefully carted off the field, a touching moment ensued as fans rose to their feet and cheered for the injured Razorback. Despite his recent transfer from Pittsburgh, where he had an impressive record of 19 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks in 12 games, Morgan had already made an impact with Arkansas, tallying four tackles and two sacks in four games.

The Razorbacks currently hold sixth place in the SEC West with a record of 2-3. They are set to face off against fourth-place Ole Miss (3-1) in their next game. Meanwhile, Texas A&M secured a 34-22 victory over Arkansas, with Max Johnson delivering two touchdown passes and throwing for 210 yards. Evan Stewart and Earnest Crownover were among the recipients of Johnson's touchdown throws.
