Arrested on rape charge, Kansas player dismissed from basketball team

21:21 30.09.2023

Kansas Jayhawks guard Arterio Morris has been dismissed from the men's basketball program after being charged with one count of rape. The incident occurred in McCarthy Hall, where the men's basketball team and other residents live near Allen Fieldhouse. Morris, 20, was arrested and booked in Douglas County, with his bond set at $75,000.

The criminal complaint alleges that the sexual assault involved an 18-year-old victim on August 26. Although Morris was not named in the initial report, he was subsequently suspended from the program. Kansas coach Bill Self released a statement acknowledging Morris' arrest and charges and confirming his dismissal from the team. However, due to the ongoing legal matter, Self stated that the program could not provide further comment at this time.

Morris, who transferred to Kansas while facing a misdemeanor assault charge in Texas, had a prior incident involving his ex-girlfriend. Last June, he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault after his ex-girlfriend reported that he had grabbed her arm, pulled her off a bed, and injured her neck. Morris was scheduled to appear at a jury trial next week but entered a no contest plea to a Class C charge, resulting in a $362 fine.

The Kansas City Star reported that Morris had been under investigation for the August 26 incident at McCarthy Hall, where the alleged victim, a 18-year-old woman from Missouri, resided. While Morris was not initially named in the incident report, the suspension from the program indicated his involvement.

Morris, a highly regarded prospect in high school, was ranked No. 15 by Rivals and No. 18 by ESPN in the Class of 2022. Despite his talent, his off-court issues have overshadowed his potential basketball career. He averaged 4.6 points per game during his freshman season at the University of Texas before transferring to Kansas.

The news of Morris' dismissal comes as a blow to the Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball program, as they prepare to start their season on November 6 against North Carolina Central. The team will now have to regroup and move forward without him, while the legal process surrounding Morris' charges continues to unfold.
