Jimmy Carter celebrates 99th birthday

21:21 01.10.2023

Former President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 99th birthday in Plains, Georgia, breaking his routine of watching church services online to spend the day with his family. The gathering took place in the same house where the Carters lived before he was first elected to the Georgia Senate in 1962. As tributes poured in from around the world, it was a special moment for the family to honor Carter's personal legacy. Despite his global fame, grandson Jason Carter emphasized that his grandparents have remained humble and down-to-earth, living in a small village and making it easy for their family to have a normal life.

In Atlanta, The Carter Center held a naturalization ceremony for 99 new American citizens from 45 different countries, timed to coincide with Carter's birthday. Tania Martinez, a 53-year-old nurse from Cuba who came to the U.S. from Ghana 12 years ago, expressed her joy and gratitude for becoming a citizen, saying, "Now, I will be free forever."

Carter's resilience and longevity have defied expectations, as he continues to make an impact and receive accolades typically reserved for when a former president passes away. Many world leaders and public figures have sent messages of congratulations and support, recognizing Carter's four decades of global humanitarian work after leaving the White House. Bill Clinton, the 42nd president, praised Carter's service and friendship, while musician Peter Gabriel led concertgoers in a rendition of Happy Birthday at Madison Square Garden.

The Carter Library & Museum and The Carter Center in Atlanta organized a weekend of events to celebrate Carter's birthday. The museum offered 99-cent admission on Saturday, and a citizenship ceremony was held on Sunday. The commemoration was made possible by Congress reaching an agreement to avoid a government shutdown, coinciding with the start of the federal fiscal year.

Carter's presidency, often viewed as a failure due to inflation, fuel shortages, and the Iran hostage crisis, has been reevaluated by historians. His focus on diplomacy, environmental issues, and efficient government has garnered second looks and appreciation. Despite his many accomplishments, Carter has remained grounded, recognizing the enduring challenges faced by society and advocating for respect and assistance for others.

President Joe Biden, in a video message, wished Carter a happy birthday, expressing his admiration and noting that Carter was the first senator to endorse his own presidential campaign. Biden also highlighted the parallels between the current economic challenges and those faced during Carter's presidency.

Carter's life and legacy are a testament to his resilience, his humanitarian efforts, and his ability to make a positive impact on the world. At 99 years old, he continues to inspire and serve as a role model for many.
