11-year-old Florida boy arrested for shooting 2 teammates at football practice

In a shocking incident that has left the community in central Florida stunned, an 11-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly shooting two of his 13-year-old teammates after a scuffle broke out during a youth football practice. The incident took place on Monday night at the Northwest Recreation Complex in Apopka, just outside of Orlando.

According to authorities, the altercation between the young boys began earlier in the evening during their Pop Warner football practice. The dispute escalated and spilled into the parking lot, where the 11-year-old suspect retrieved a gun from his mother's car. Without any hesitation, he fired a single shot, hitting one boy in the arm and the other in the torso. Apopka Police Chief Mike McKinley expressed his shock at the situation, stating, "That's not good. We shouldn't have 11-year-olds that have access to guns and think they can resolve a dispute with a firearm."

The call for help came at approximately 8:18 p.m. ET, and officers swiftly arrived on the scene at 8:24 p.m. McKinley emphasized the potential danger of the situation, as the crowded scene could have resulted in more tragic consequences. Thankfully, the injuries sustained by the victims were not life-threatening, with one remaining in the hospital in stable condition while the other has been released.

McKinley expressed his gratitude that the situation did not turn out worse, stating, "We all thank god nobody was hurt more seriously than what they were. This could have been a very tragic incident." He also voiced his concern about the prevalence of such incidents in society, particularly involving young children with access to firearms. "As a society, we need to reflect on this. We see this way too often in our society now of juveniles, young juveniles, and they're getting younger every day, that have access to guns," McKinley said. "But the more disturbing part is they believe that gun, that firearm, is a resolution to their problems - and it's not a resolution to anybody's problems."

McKinley revealed that the gun used in the shooting was stored in a box in the shooter's mother's car. However, it was not properly secured as it should have been. As a result, the suspect's parent is also expected to face charges for their negligence in securing the firearm. A surveillance camera reportedly captured the incident, showing the victims fleeing from the shooter as he pulled the trigger.

The identity of the alleged shooter has not been released due to his age, but reports describe him as "baby-faced." McKinley noted that the boy appeared "very quiet and shy" and looked "very somber" following his arrest. The young suspect has been charged with attempted second-degree murder, which McKinley stated as the only charge necessary given his lack of criminal history.

The involvement of an 11-year-old in such a violent act has shocked the community and raised concerns about the accessibility of firearms to young children. The Pop Warner organization, under which the football practice took place, has not yet commented on the incident. As authorities continue their investigation, the focus remains on providing support to the victims and their families while addressing the issues surrounding youth and gun violence in society.
