Aaron Rodgers Jabs Travis Kelce as 'Mr. Pfizer' in Roasting Chiefs' Performance

19:01 03.10.2023

In a recent appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers took a playful jab at Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, dubbing him "Mr. Pfizer." The nickname stems from Kelce's recent partnership with the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, in which he has appeared in commercials promoting the company's COVID-19 and flu vaccines. Rodgers, who has been a prominent figure in the anti-vaccine movement in sports, made the comment while discussing the Jets' loss to the Chiefs, where Swift was in attendance for the second week in a row to witness a Chiefs victory.

During the interview, McAfee and former Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk, co-hosts of the show and former teammates of Rodgers, laughed as the four-time MVP tried to maintain a straight face while discussing the game. McAfee seized the opportunity to ask Rodgers about the nickname for Kelce again, to which Rodgers responded, "He's doing commercials for Pfizer, so I'm sure he's owning it."

Rodgers, who was present on the Jets' sideline for the first time since his Achilles injury in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, was seen engaging in a conversation with Kelce during the pre-game warm-ups on the MetLife Stadium turf. Kelce, who has gained media attention due to his rumored relationship with Taylor Swift, was a notable talking point leading up to the game. However, Rodgers chose to keep the details of their conversation private, stating, "I think some things need to be left on the field. I think it's a better story when it's left up to the imagination."

In addition to their conversation, Rodgers reminisced about his interactions with Kelce's teammate, Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He jokingly referenced previous instances where their matchups were prevented due to injuries or health issues, including his own fractured toe during the 2021 season, which led to speculations of "COVID toe" as a side effect of COVID-19.

Rodgers has been a controversial figure in the realm of vaccination, with his immunized comment causing a stir after testing positive for COVID-19 during the 2021 season. He later admitted to not being vaccinated and has been vocal about his resistance to getting the COVID-19 vaccine. In a previous interview with McAfee, Rodgers addressed the backlash he has received, stating, "There's heroes and villains in sports and entertainment, and I think, because of my stance on COVID and maybe some other things, I've been cast as the villain."

Despite their differing opinions on vaccines, Rodgers and Kelce appeared to share a cordial relationship, as evidenced by their conversation before the game. While McAfee and Hawk highlighted the irony of Rodgers' comments considering Jets owner Woody Johnson's ties to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company, Rodgers maintained that Kelce's partnership with Pfizer warranted the nickname.

The lighthearted banter took an unexpected turn when both Rodgers' and Hawk's video feeds dropped during the live show, prompting laughter from McAfee. McAfee jokingly remarked, "While Aaron was preaching his gospel, AJ just drops off the screen completely. Now Aaron's dropping out there? Hope you're happy with your joke, Aaron. Pfizer joke." Hawk added, "Real funny. They're coming after you, Aaron. They're coming after you."

In the end, the playful exchange between Rodgers and Kelce showcased the unique dynamics of their relationship, with both athletes finding common ground despite their divergent views on vaccination.
