Gaetz and House Democrats unite to oust McCarthy as House Speaker

21:48 03.10.2023

In a stunning turn of events, House Democrats and hardline conservatives joined forces to oust Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position. The motion to vacate was met with mixed reactions from House Democrats, with some celebrating the decision while others described it as a solemn day in America. All 208 House Democrats who were present voted to remove McCarthy from his role, with the support of eight Republicans, surpassing the five Republican votes needed to oust him.

Democratic Whip Katherine Clark expressed her disappointment in McCarthy's misuse of power, disregard for the needs of the American people, and disloyalty to anyone but himself. She emphasized that the Republican civil war extends beyond McCarthy, as right-wing MAGA extremism has taken over the Republican Party.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed the sentiment, calling the vote a solemn moment in America. He expressed hope that traditional Republicans would distance themselves from MAGA extremism and work with Democrats for the good of the country. Progressive Democrat Ayanna Pressley even extended an invitation for Republicans to vote for Hakeem Jeffries as the new Speaker of the House.

Ilhan Omar, another progressive Democrat, issued a scathing statement against McCarthy, labeling him a threat to democracy. She accused him of voting to overturn the 2020 election results and overthrowing the duly elected President, while doing nothing to discourage his fellow Republicans from doing the same. Omar further criticized McCarthy as a weak politician.

The vote to vacate McCarthy's position was a result of the cooperation between hardline conservatives and progressive Democrats. Both sides pointed fingers at McCarthy, with Republicans accusing him of breaking promises and Democrats condemning his lack of interest in bipartisanship. Democrat Mikie Sherrill criticized McCarthy for empowering right-wing extremists and consistently breaking his word.

Prior to the vote, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed that Democrats were ready to find bipartisan common ground, but their extreme colleagues in the Republican Party showed no willingness to do the same. He called for an end to the House Republican Civil War.

The process to elect McCarthy as Speaker of the House in January was marred by controversy, taking 15 rounds of voting until he was finally elected. However, his recent decision to pass a short-term spending bill known as a continuing resolution (CR) drew criticism from hardliners within his own party.

Following McCarthy's removal as Speaker, Republican Matt Gaetz took a victory lap and expressed concern for the future of the conservative agenda in the House. Gaetz criticized McCarthy for a lackluster oversight, misaligned spending priorities, and failure to address issues such as the subpoenaing of Hunter Biden. Gaetz advocated for a new speaker to advance the conservative agenda.

In the interim, House Financial Services Chair Patrick McHenry will serve as the temporary speaker until a replacement for McCarthy is chosen. Gaetz mentioned several potential candidates he would support for the speakership, including Tom Emmer, Mike Johnson, Jodey Arrington, Kevin Hern, or Steve Scalise.

The historic vote to remove McCarthy saw passionate speeches from both sides, with the majority of Republicans staunchly defending McCarthy's leadership. However, several Republicans who voted against McCarthy cited his failure to keep promises and his lack of alignment with conservative principles. The decision to oust McCarthy was met with strong opposition from some Republicans, who highlighted the conservative victories achieved under his leadership.

Despite the division and tension within the House, the outcome of the vote signifies a significant shift in power and raises questions about the future direction of the Republican Party. As the search for a new Speaker begins, it remains to be seen how the dynamics within the House will evolve and whether bipartisanship can be achieved in the face of ideological differences.
