US House Searches for New Speaker, Removes McCarthy in Unprecedented Vote

22:45 03.10.2023

In a historic move, the United States House of Representatives voted to remove Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position. The expulsion came as a result of infighting within the Republican party and persistent challenges from its right-wing faction. The 216-210 vote marked the first time in the House's 234-year history that its leader had been voted out.

Leading up to the vote, tensions within the Republican party had been brewing, and McCarthy's failure to take a stand on critical issues became a point of contention. Far-right Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz, who spearheaded the effort to remove McCarthy, criticized him for not standing up where it mattered. Gaetz, in a social media post prior to the vote, declared, "So if he won't, I will."

The vote to remove McCarthy underscores the growing turmoil within the Republican Party, also known as the GOP. McCarthy's clashes with the hard-right faction within his party had been ongoing since he assumed the role of speaker in January. The lack of a clear replacement within the party further adds to the uncertainty surrounding its leadership.

Following McCarthy's removal, Republican Representative Patrick McHenry, a close ally of McCarthy, was temporarily appointed as acting speaker. However, McHenry's role is limited, as he can only serve for up to three legislative days. The responsibilities of the acting speaker are vague, according to the chamber's rules and procedures. McHenry's primary task, as stated by Republican Representative Kelly Armstrong, will be to "get us a new speaker." Anything beyond that would result in McHenry's removal from the role.

The immediate consequence of McCarthy's removal is a potential freeze on legislating. Without a House speaker in place, it is unlikely that further action will be taken on bills to fund the government. Lawmakers face a deadline of November 17 to provide more funding or risk a partial government shutdown. The battles over these bills and dissatisfaction over McCarthy's failure to secure deep spending cuts, as desired by hard-right conservatives, led to Gaetz's successful move to unseat him.

Following the vote, House Republicans and Democrats huddled privately to determine their next steps both politically and legislatively. While Democrats are solidly behind Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as their candidate for speaker, Republicans, due to their divisions, especially among the hard-line conservatives seeking significant spending cuts, may struggle to settle on a candidate. McHenry, as the acting speaker, could potentially have an advantage, although his intentions regarding the position remain unclear. McCarthy, on the other hand, stated that he would not seek the role again.

The timing of the next speaker election remains uncertain. The leaders of both parties will need to decide when they are ready to initiate the process. The previous election for speaker in January was marked by chaos, with McCarthy unable to secure enough votes and enduring 15 ballots. It is possible that the upcoming election for Republicans could be equally chaotic unless they recognize that such turmoil may harm their prospects in the 2024 elections and opt for unity.

It is worth noting that, under the U.S. Constitution, the House speaker does not necessarily have to be a member of Congress. Some Republicans have even floated the idea of former President Donald Trump assuming the role, despite his presidential campaign and his public statements indicating that he does not desire the position.

The House of Representatives finds itself in an unprecedented moment, and the exact timeline for the speaker election remains uncertain. However, the events unfolding within the chamber reflect the deep divisions and power struggles within the Republican party, which will undoubtedly shape the future of U.S. politics.
