Identity of 'Happy Face' serial killer's victim revealed after nearly 3 decades

In a groundbreaking development, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office announced that the identity of a woman, who was murdered by the notorious Happy Face serial killer Keith Jesperson, has finally been determined after decades of investigative efforts. The victim, previously known as Jane Doe, has been identified as Suzanne Kjellenberg, a 34-year-old woman who was hitchhiking across the country at the time of her death.

The case began in 1994 when the skeletal remains of a woman were discovered by an inmate crew working off Interstate 10 in Holt, Florida. It wasn't until 1996 that Jesperson, a long-haul trucker responsible for multiple murders, confessed to killing a woman and dumping her body at that location. However, the victim remained unidentified for years, presenting a second mystery that would only be solved recently.

The breakthrough in identifying Kjellenberg came through the utilization of a new technique called genetic genealogy. Investigators from a private lab created a genetic profile of the victim and compared it to millions of profiles in public databases, leading them to partial matches and eventually to Kjellenberg's relatives in Wisconsin. The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office expressed gratitude for the perseverance of investigators, the Medical Examiner's Office, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), and acknowledged the family's request for privacy during this difficult time.

Sheriff Eric Aden emphasized the significance of this identification, stating that "Suzanne deserves a voice," and highlighting the years of effort dedicated to solving this case. The confirmation of Kjellenberg's identity has allowed her to be remembered and honored properly, bringing closure to her loved ones who had long awaited answers.

Keith Jesperson, already serving multiple life sentences for confessing to eight murders between 1990 and 1995, has now been formally charged with Kjellenberg's murder. Investigators have strong evidence against him, including a videotaped confession where he detailed the events leading to her death. According to Jesperson, he picked up Kjellenberg at a Florida truck stop, and while they were at a rest area off I-10, she began screaming when he sat down beside her on the bed. In a panic, Jesperson admitted to choking her with his fists and then using zip ties to further incapacitate her. He chillingly described the act as "just an easy thing to do" due to his history of murdering numerous individuals.

The identification of Kjellenberg marks the sixth confirmed victim of Jesperson's killing spree. Initially, he made numerous false claims, boasting of over 160 slayings. However, detectives were able to corroborate his involvement in eight murders across multiple states, including California, Florida, Nebraska, Oregon, Washington, and Wyoming. Jesperson gained notoriety for writing letters to the media, signed with a smiley face, in which he claimed responsibility for the crimes, leading to his nickname "Happy Face Killer."

Despite Jesperson's initial mention of the victim possibly being named Susan or "Suzette," authorities struggled to identify Kjellenberg for years. Multiple facial reconstructions, anthropological examinations, and isotope analysis were conducted, but no breakthroughs occurred until late 2022 when investigators collaborated with Othram, a private company specializing in genetic genealogy. Within just six weeks, the long-standing mystery surrounding Kjellenberg's identity was finally resolved.

The resolution of this case highlights the power of advancements in forensic science and genetic genealogy in solving cold cases. The identification of Suzanne Kjellenberg not only provides closure to her family but also demonstrates the unwavering dedication of law enforcement and the tireless efforts made to bring justice to victims of heinous crimes like those committed by Keith Jesperson.
